Gustav Mahler Symphony No.9
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim conductor
The renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra has always been linked with the world's greatest conductors. This pair (second performance on April 4th) of concerts offers an unmissable opportunity to hear it with two of the finest musicians of our time. Daniel Barenboim takes the helm for Mahler's great Ninth Symphony. Mahler believed that the Ninth Symphony would be his last, and he poured into its huge structure all the anguish of farewell, but also an unquenchable thirst for life. Echoes of his favourite Austrian folk dances and a mocking parody of a Scherzo give way finally to a glorious, lyrical Adagio of unsurpassed warmth and intensity, offering, in Bruno Walter's words, 'a vision of the radiance of Heaven'.
