Hey all. I currently use the Shew 1 for lead work. I love the feel. What I don't love is that often times my upper register sounds thinner than I'd like. It's not a thin sound overall, just thin compared to what I'd like to get. I've worked with this mouthpiece for a while with no luck in that area.
I really like the feel of this mouthpiece so I want to keep that as similar as possible, but I'd like to experiment to see if I can't get a bigger sound with something different. Any suggestions? Again I'd like to keep the same general feel. Thanks in advance |

As you haven't stated why you would rule them out, here is the obvious: try a Shew 1.25 or 1.5! _________________ One cannot expect to attain the highest point of exellence without hard work and perseverance.[...] Try to improve to some extent each day and to experience that satisfying pleasure in having conquered what at first seemed to be an impossibility! - Clarke |

...or you could have the backbore and or throat opened up. Osmun can do that for you. |

I'm playing his 1.25 now, and you're not getting it back, Armond! _________________ Jonathan Vieker

Try the Marc. Shew 1.5. I also play the 8335LA and it works well for me. I prefer the Shew 2 with my Conn 36B. I love the feel of the Marc. mouthpieces. Stick with it. I'm contemplating having the 1.5 opened up to .144 like the Shew 2 to see how it woks with my Conn 36B. Any thoughts anyone?? _________________ Yamaha 8335LA- For Sale

You could also get the mouthpiece top threaded for Warburton backbores to find resistance and sound you desire. |

I just posted something like this 2-3 weeks ago. If you search the forum, you will find plenty of answers for this question. (I searched after I posted)
I just switched to an al cass 3x6 and it is amazing. The rim is a bit more rounded than the shew 1 which doesn't allow you to use as near as much pressure. My suggestion is too learn as much as you can about mouthpieces and try a million of them. I would search that Trade or Trial forum for something that is around the same Inner Diameter .662 for the shew 1. If you can find a comfy rim with a deeper cup, tighter backbore and bigger throat you might be in business... depending on how you use your air. Hope this helps. _________________ Just playin music... |

I went from the Shew to Warburtons to reeves. I am now a Reeves fan and I absolutely love my sound on his pieces. 'Nuff said.
Try a Reeves 41s.
However, my experience has been that generally if you have a thin sound on a shallower piece, that's more a function of you not yet really knowing how to play it rather than the mp itself. It takes time to learn how to play shallow pieces, especially if you're coming from deep ones. _________________ Schilke B1

The Monette Shew "copy" is a great Monette piece; however, you will have to get use to a larger throat. The sound is much bigger and louder ... I have owned both. This Monette piece was originally made for Pete Olstad. Last I looked there was one for sale here for $200.00 ... they're now $325.00 new. |

Thanks for all the great info everyone!!!
I have been playing shallow pieces for a long time now so I know how to play them. I used to have a lot of issues but now I actually prefer them.
I am going to Ohio ITG in 2 weeks so I'll try out some pieces while i'm there. I believe Alex from GR will be there as well as Warburton. Excited! |
