I'd be interested in knowing who provides mouthpiece duplication+alteration services and for what price?

I'd need duplication, down sizing and some rim alteration.

Our own Doug Meeuwsen does this and does a good job. If you like supporting a one-man shop, you might consider his work.

Kanstul does the best duplicating available, but might not be the best for alterations. They can do anything you want, but you should really go to a mouthpiece specialist for any alterations.

Greg Black duplicates, too, and does it the "old school" way with lead impressions. He can also do any alterations you need and answer any questions you might have about the effect of those changes.

the only person who will do an accurate duplication is bob reeves. if u know someone who does business with him, and you haven't, let him handle the business.
bob has been and remains the most qualified person.
aside from being the most qualified, he is the only one who will deliver an accurate duplication.

WOW...he's the only one? Yeah, ok. I'm sure he's great but there are others who can accurately put out a duplication as well. Care to qualify your statement as to why he's the only one?

I knew there were some gear heads here

Does anybody know how much would it cost to duplicate the mouthpiece, downsize it (from 7 to around 10 1/2) and make the inner rim a bit less sharp?
Have you ever asked to have something like this done?

I second Tim here on this. Kanstul with Jim New, the best hands down. Warburton also does great work as far as alterations go. A friend of mine had a Warburton top fitted to an existing mouthpiece where he liked the rim and had it lobbed off to fit an MD bottom. It played very well by itself but had him drill the throat one size to a 26 and also take a "little" off the inner rim, round it off slightly and it was just what he needed and wanted. He did the same to another mpc except the throat drilling, just cutting and threading and rim altering and again, just perfect.

I believe that Kanstul specifically boasts this kind of alteration. I've not had it done but I believe I read that a scan/duplication costs around $250 with subsequent copies being around $125. Not sure where I read it so please check with them before making any decision.

Thats possible but maybe see what is already avaible at Kanstul in there mpc catalog. They have std, mt vernon and ny bach tops, where the mt vernon tops are a little more rounded, you might find some luck. The Mt Ver 7c is great. i had an original one and loved it but they have a 10 1/2 dupliacte as well.

Ah, sorry...when I said from 7 to 10 1/2 I was just quoting the size... It's not a Bach mouthpiece I'm talking about

BTW, I'm researching this now and I found out that Karl Hammond has a very nice and clear pricing chart:

http://www.karlhammonddesign.com/services/custom.php

I like that. What I'm planning to do next is to send emails to maybe a half a dozen of these mpc makers and try to get quotes.

Kanstul does not charge for the scanning.

I strongly suggest anyone who has a mouthpiece that they would be devastated should it ever get lost to have it scanned. That way it's a simple phone call & exchange of funds to get a replacement.

I'm not sure what they charge for making the dupe. best to call. 888. KANSTUL

Tim, the last time I got a piece from Kanstul it was a Trigg - Calicchio Artist Model, it was around $125/135. I imagine a scan duplicate wouldn't be more than $150 or so. Veyr worth it. I'm going to send my spare Marcinkiewicz custom to have it scanned, maybe on the same blank or a heavier one. Jim New is great with all of his mouthpiece work, I trust what he does.

Not necessarily, sometimes people just are overpriced. Kanstul does excellent and consistant work. Kanstul mpcs also play more open when the sound of Reeves are either too bright and schrill or just sound funny. He makes some decent stuff but Kanstul has it down. Not to mention Marcinkiewicz and Warburton.

"the sound of Reeves are either too bright and schrill or just sound funny"

last year i had some master classes with Vince DiMartino and he was blow up the room with his custom Reeves mpc and belive me his sound is not funny or schrill mabe on the bright side but this is not bad , the mpc is just a tool a good one or a bad one o.k but if someone sounds funny with a piece for sure is not the piece but the player.

Regards

I'll second this!

I just had Doug duplicate my old custom piece and he did outstanding work - in fact it plays better than the original! Go figure. I'd contact him for sure. It certainly wouldn't hurt and you may be surprised by his very reasonable rates.

Guys: All these guys plus many others can do this job. Certainly, each mouthpiece maker has his own style and there are little differences in concept causing some pieces to have different character but on a whole
they can all do it. Marcinkiewicz copied a piece that Herrick made for me in the 60's. As he worked for Herrick and learned from him that was my best bet..for the similar character of sound. Bottom line: the Marcinkiewicz has the feel and character of sound of the Herrick but played more open (same specs) anyway...go to whoever is closer and stand there and try the piece at different stages of the process...
