Bill,

There's a guy in FL named Tom Parmerter who I'm guessing is a straight Type III . . . and he plays trumpet. Last I knew he was living in St. Petersburg, but he might have moved over toward Orlando where he was getting tons of work.

This guy looks almost like he's playing clarinet, his angle is so low, and he has ridiculous chops. Pretty scary range and endurance, and decent jazz player as well.

Ever seen him play? Dave Pruyn knows him and might be able to help with this guesswork.

Bill,

Conrad Gozzo was a standard type III.

Kenny Smuckle told me that Doc originally typed him a I.

Bill, you are very well versed in the pivot system. You and I bolth have probably seen our share of type I's and II's, but without looking and their natural bite they just look like type IV's or IIIA's while playing.

Rich,

I ran into Tom Parmeter a couple of years ago in Tampa. His set up really looked different (like you said-like a clarinet player), but man could he play...big sound, great high chops, and excellent beboppin'.

I see Tom all the time. He is my choice of best jazzer in the Tampa to Orlando area, maybe the State.

You mean, you think he's better than all those great ones up at UNF?

Really?

Well, hush my mouth!

Chris;
You are correct, I probably worked with some players that were I's or II's and did not know it.
Rich, I could tell you MANY horror stories that would make you wish you had some of those people.
I do know what you mean. Don't you love the music business?
David Pruyn, have not seen nor heard from him for many years. I finally got him to see Doc, he took the Orientation but I do not know if he ever went back to see Doc. I think Doc typed him as a IIIB.

Don't you figure that the increased availablity and affordability of orthidontic work has also affected the statistics of how people place the mouthpiece? It seems to me that this would affect the horizontal (side to side) placement more than the vertical placement that affects the airstream direction. It would also explain why there are fewer type Is and IIs today (if indeed there are fewer today). I don't know how this would affect the number of Type IIIAs over IIIBs today, but it is possible that that's why we see more IIIAs than IIIBs today.

Informally, I have a brass studio of 12 students. Here's how they break down (for now):

Type II - 1 trumpet (he knows himself as a Type IV, since these two types are for all practical purposes identical when playing)

Type III - 1 trombone

Type IIIA - 2 French horns, 2 trombones, 1 euphonium

Type IIIB - 3 trumpets

Type IVAs - 1 trumpet, 1 euphonium

If you want to add me in the mix, I'm a Type IVA.

Although this isn't a large sample, the Type IIIAs win, with the Type IIIBs in second. One of these days I'll go through my dissertation data and try to classify them all according to Reinhardt's types rather than just as upstream, downstream with type 1 pivot and downstream with type 2 pivot. That would be a much larger sample and would provide a more accurate data, but they're all trombone players, which would skew the data with regards to the larger mouthpiece size.

The embouchure type breakdown in my house:

1 IIIB downstream trumpet player;
1 IVA upstream trombone player.

And only one person lives here.

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I'm schizophrenic
And so am I.

Dave I don't think that you should count the french horn players.

Most of the french horn players I've seen where IIIA.

I think that when they all start out they are encouraged to place really high.

I did notice that ALL your trumpet players where IIIB.
