This has been asked, no doubt, a thousand times before, but doesn't hurt to update the list:

We all know Art Farmer, Clark Terry, and Chuck M. We know Miles dabbled in Flugelhorn as have most jazz players,

But which other jazz musicians, besides Farmer and Terry (and Chuck if you call that jazz) either up and coming or historical have focused primarily on Flugel for jazz.

Dimitri Matheny is a flugel player

Shorty Rogers moved to the flugel
Anyone know if Thad Jones concentrated on the flugel with his big band?

Hugh Masekela switched to flugelhorn a long time ago.

I'm also a big fan of Guido Basso.

The thought of just playing flugel is enticing. If you don't have other gigs in an orchestra, big band, latin band, etc. and have the luxury of just sitting around listening to the mellow sounds in your head......why not? Especially if your muse is leading you to that particular sound.

But I'm afraid that maybe your chops might start to atrophy after a while if you just play flugel.

I know both Mr. Farmer and Mr. Basso were/are both great trumpet players. I wonder if they had/have to put in a certain amount of time on the trumpet in order to keep their technical facility at the highest levels.

I'd love to know if these great flugel specialists, and others like them, do their Clark Studies, long tones, tonguing, etc. on flugel.

Thanks for reminding me of Guido Basso guys!
He did some fabulous work with the Rob McConnell band. I'll have to revisit those recordings now and search out new to me recordings of Guido.

Most of my jazz in public is small combo or solo work played on flugel.

Next Down Beat readers poll, don't forget . . .

Wilbur Harden, only did a few recordings, but did a lot for bringing the flugel into modern small group Jazz.

Yay Wilbur ... interesting player ... I pull out his work with John Coletrane often.

I enjoy both Eddie Henderson and Roy Hargroves approach to the flugel.

Arturo!

Sorry, he doesn't focus primarily on flugel, although he's got some great tracks. "I Left This Space for You" is one of my all-time favorite ballads.

Help a fellow out folks: if you have a recommendation of someone who mostly plays trumpet, how about a few recommended tracks or CD's where the flugel is featured?
