Love at first sight!

The Piccolo Trumpet is made by Bernhard Zirnbauer. More pictures and a full report to come, but for now... something to drool over.

Wow that is truly beautiful. Congratulations on your new horn!
Is there a website where it has more information about this horn (or for when I am interested in buying one )

A more detailed report when I'm not on the Blackberry. I will say this... It plays, and does not know a cieling where the trumpet just "stops." And it is good enough for the Berlin Phil, and they now have several. It comes in B/A, A, and A/G.

That is a really beautiful horn. I would say it has a very organic design. Nothing fancy like tons of engraving and gold and silver plating in different colors but still a very beautiful horn! I love how mechanical it looks.

Huh. Now that is an interesting looking horn.

Probably beyond my price range, though.

Okay guys. Bernhard Zirnbauer is a valve maker. And his valves can be seen in a lot of trumpets and horns from a lot of makers. Schagerl is one of them. The style shown is a Gansch style machine set up, he also does a different kind that sets the machines out the other side, but still top action.

The piccolo feels big, has a warm sound, and does not prevent me from playing as high on the piccolo as I do on my main trumpet. I am selling my Scherzer, and saving for the A/G piccolo: I think it is that good. As I said, it is good enough for the Berlin Philharmonic to buy some, so it is good enough for me.

As for the price: It is 4100.00 euros and that includes the A pipe. People can get them from me, at that price, or they can visit Bernhard and get it for the same. He is a neat guy, the shop is a great place, and the horn is from my dreams (I told him that I have been dreaming of such a horn, but have not the tools, or the knowledge, yet, to make that come true).

From now on, the best trumpets I make will have Zirnbauer valves in them.

At the exchange rate today [1USD=1.439Euro] this trumpet costs US$5900, so it will be close to $6K with the shipping and insurance, for US buyers. I cannot find any information on the horn on the internet at all.

It is a beautiful and unusual horn, but I'm afraid it is out of reach for a lot of us.

Royjohn,
There is nothing on the internet about that horn, except what I have just posted. There are no pictures either, except for the ones I have posted or will post.... Maybe should post a picture of me holding it.... it makes it a little less "unreal." As far as I know, I am the only one outside the Munich area to have one...

If you like playing piccolo, thid is a horn to save your pennies for. I think it is close to the price of the Scherzer, or the Schagerl Tristan... And it is custom made: so not a bad deal if you have been waiting for this horn to come your way. I don't have all of m old horn collection back, but I am building my collection back. I will post more pictures, and hopefully a short video soon.

It is a beautiful horn... Can you say anything about intonation, ease of playing, blending, etc?

Too bad you live in Singapore.

I can camel:
It is easier to play than my Scherzer, or the Tristan, and way easier to play than my old Selmer Paris. I have my full usable range from the big trumpet to this trumpet, and it sounds big and full.

Intonation its in tune: I'm not sure about using the word "slot" but I will try. The horn slot's well. Up and down the open range (valves too). They are wider slots that my trumpet, but I have always been able to bend things more on the little trumepts. This piccolo favours a deep cup, and loves the wide open backbore on my mouthpiece (it accepts trumpet mouthpieces, but since it is made to order almost....just tell Bernhard what you are using).

I will try and get a couple more views on it from some friends here, and maybe Stumac can chime in after he stops here in Singapore. Give it time, it will make it out into the bigger parts of the net soon, and the rest of the world soon, I am sure.

Okay there is no other way to ask you this, so I'll just ask:
Where can I buy one?

That's a sho-nuff, by-gawd, fine looking piccolo. If only:
1) I had a few extra $1000 bills
2) Time to practice
3) Venue in which to play
4) Demand for my playing

It really is a paradigm shift in terms of design. Thanks for sharing and giving us a 'first look'.
