I once played a job with members of the CSO brass, notably Dale Clevenger and two other CSO horn players. The part was for D trumpet, and rehearsals went well. The next day was the gig, but the night before I had practiced the Haydn and Hummel for future jobs. When I went to the church for the CSO job the next morning, I felt great that the job was going to go really well, so I was very relaxed. It was time to go out, so I sat in my chair in front of a fairly good size crowd, looked around, put my music on the stand and stared playing a few notes. That's when I realized that my horn was in Eb and not D. I left the D slides at home.
I tried to pull the bell out as far as I could, but it wasn't working, so I freaked and read like a mad man, trying to transpose to save my life. It worked, but it wasn't pretty. |

Could be worse:
-"Hey, we're out of options. Could you come play the opera tonight?"
-"...You know I'm mostly a commercial player, right?"
-"..."
-"...I'll be there at 6."
-"K." _________________ Jeff Mason |

This is nowhere near as bad, but it reminds me of a time...
... in college orchestra. We were on tour in South Dakota or something, and playing a Bassoon concerto or something - maybe the Weber. I could be wrong, it's been over a decade. Since the instrumentation was small, lots of wind players left and we moved up two rows to sit next to the 2 horns (2 rows of winds instead of 4)
Usually we played it on our C trumpets. The previous piece we had used Bb's. We moved on up, the piece started, and we looked down and still had our Bb's in hands.
Oh well. Fortunately the piece wasn't hard and didn't have a ton of notes. It went just fine. It makes a good story though. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

My college jazz band was headlining for a jazz competition we were hosting. There were two of us doubling on the first chart and when the director called up the next number we couldn't find it in our folder.
Obviously one of us had made a mistake and taken it to practice. Go figure.
We looked at each other and one of us suggested playing if from memory. We both agreed and did so.
After the concert we went up to the director and told him what had happened. He had a really good laugh.
Until he found out we weren't joking. Boy was he mad.
But, no one including the director could tell we didn't have the chart. |
