I just purchased a CD of Phil Smith playing hymns with organ. What a sound! I know he would sound great on anything but I was curious what equipment he is currently playing on? |

Not exactly sure.. but I know on his orchestral excerpts CD he was playing a Bach 37 with a Bach 1C mouthpiece and for picc he played a Schilke P54 with a Bach 7E. _________________ J. Fowler

Phil Smith uses a C trumpet 99.9% of the time, so he was probably playing his Bach 229/25H C trumpet, with a 1C rim on a B underpart, full schmidt (I think) backbore.

The Excerpts CD details the horns, mpcs (and even mutes if I recall correctly) used in the recording. In the verbal "trumpet notes" he states the horn he used if it was not obvious. Everyone is right so far: Bach 229/25H, Bach 37 and Schilke P5-4. It also lists the cornet, but I don't recall the specs - British I believe.
As for mpc details, it doesn't go beyond 1C, 7E and the cornet piece. Rims, underparts, bores, etc. aren't listed there. There must be another source. |

That's strange,
You must have a different edition of the excerpt CD, because my lists everything about the mouthpieces, as far as rims, cups, and even backbores.

I believe Phil Smith used a Getzen Eterna cornet on his excerpt recording. |

I stand corrected. It does indeed show those details. My bad. |

That's ok Tromba Man. I just remembered because he used some really strange backbores on stuff...like Giardinelli backbores. I thought that was strange, but it must work for him...he IS Phil Smith...

I'm sure that Phil Smith uses his C trumpet a great deal of the time. However, I also think he uses his Bb more than many orchestral guys due to his background. I understand that he often performs both the Haydn and Hummel on Bb rather than Eb when he solos with different groups.

Phil Smith played B-flat on all of the Curnow Music Press series. Check out these books and CDs on the CMP web site. He uses a C in the orchestra 99% of the time, but most of his solo work is done on B-flat unless the piece is conceived as a C piece. His equipment is what is stated on the Excerpt CD. Mouthpiece is 1C rim on a 5B underpart with a 23 throat and 24 backbore. |

I thought the underpart was a 1B.

ta,ta,ta - how in the world do you know that? Are you a student, colleague, friend or do you own a very, very good set of binoculars??
I'm glad to hear he's still playing his Bach. |

There seems to be some disagreement of what mouthpiece Phil plays on. I've always heard that it was a Bach 1C rim on a 1B underpart. The backbore is bigger than the standard C cup backbore. I also found this info on O.J.'s trumpet page. I find it interesting.

Why? Do you have "inside" information?
Actually, I've checked a couple of sources (excerpt CD and an interview in WindPlayer magazine), and you could well be right.
Because a B underpart is most often mentioned, I've just assumed (not having any experience with screw-rim mouthpieces) that if a 1C rim was being used then the B part would have to be a No.1 size, and with the O.J. list mentioned above it's easy to reach the wrong conclusion.
