Just getting around to writing an article on my experience at Trumpet Day, a miniature ITG event at The University of Massachussettes/Amherstthis past Saturday the 1st. It featured Eric Berlin, the trumpet instructer at the school, Jeff Holmes, the director of the big band and jazz studies, and special guest clinician Vince DiMartino. Also performing were the trumpet students at the school. It was a most educational experience, both musically and academically! I can't wait to share it with everyone.
I am writing a review of the event that I will be posting on Pivot Talk www.pivotalk.com and will have it posted next week. Since it will be on Pivot Talk, a Reinhardt-based "blog" that Paul Garrett has created and moderates, I will write a standard review followed by my observations of the "embouchures" present. I will say this: everyone impressed me in all ways!

Dave, looking forward to hearing your account! I'm really bummed that I missed the event at UMass! It's hard being on the other side of the country...

You can go to www.pivotalk.com and click on "downloads" and find a NEW review. This is the Review of Trumpet Day from UMass Amherst. Planned will be a follow-up of The Embouchures of the participants. Trust all will enjoy the review and glean some information that will be helpful. Pete,
I didn't attend the evening concert. Perhaps you would like to tell us of your experience and give us a "mini" review here. Dave _________________ "For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them".

On the Download/Review, write your questions in COMMENTS and I can go there to help you. The points you mentioned by Vince DiMartino are what he actually said, so he would have to do most of the clarifications himself. I can only give you my "take" on them. As to #2, the G above the staff for him is his Focal Point (see Rich Willey for this). Thanks for your interest.

Hi Dave,
Here you go:
The concert started off with “Autumn Leaves“, performed by Vinnie DiMartino, Jeff Holmes on Piano, Chris Sartori on bass, and Tom Giampietro on drums. Vinnie has such a fluid playing style and he makes improvising sound so natural and effortless. The next tune that was performed was “My Funny Valentine” with the same group. Jeff Holmes played excellent piano solos on both. The third small group tune was “Blue Bossa.” He performed it with a student on saxophone. She played the head while Vinnie played an echo type of response to the head which was very interesting. Now that was all good!
The next thing that was performed was “Jazz Suite for 4 Trumpets & Rhythm Section“, written and arranged by Jeff Holmes a while ago. The trumpet lineup was Vinnie DiMartino, Jeff Holmes, Eric Berlin, and grad student Micah Maurio. Ben Falkoff was added on guitar, and Tim Harrington on congas were added to the existing rhythm section. Vinnie knew this piece and asked Jeff if he wanted to play it for the concert. Now, I’ve known Jeff Holmes for 30 years, and I had never heard this. It was extremely impressive with the writing and performing because it was so intense as well as difficult to play. And yes, Jeff plays trumpet and piano equally and extremely well.
The last thing they played was “Byouba”, written by Jeff Haskell and arranged by Jeff Holmes. I believe that Jeff arranged this for the Carmine Caruso competition a few years back. The UMASS Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Jeff Holmes, performed this with Vinnie, who was featured on this and he and the jazz ensemble were just great!
Vinnie has such a positive attitude, that it rubs off on the musicians as well as the audience. I wish I had been able to catch the rest of the day.
