Hope that I am posting in the correct forum. Forgiveness please if I am not.

My 12 year old son needs a competition piece with piano accompaniment. The played Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary last year so he needs something different.

He has a good tone but this suffers above C in the staff. Eighth notes are about is fast as he can play.

We also need to limit to the classics rather than contemporary or jazz and such.

It is turning out to be tough to find something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tomasi and Jolivet are good choices!

Try the Vandercook solos. There is a set of progressive solos that are called trumpet stars that are nice and easy and good preparation for harder solos.
Hope it helps.

OK, I listened to this one.

It sounds like R2D2 as an old man.

If he has good tone then make sure that you let him display it well as most modern 12 year olds seem to have not been encouraged with this at all. When I was 12 ( and having good tone) I was required to play the 2nd movement of Haydn's trumpet concerto,...it turned out to be a winner form me and put me on the map. so to speak......

Fortunately for me my maths teacher at school (who was an excellent violinist) worked on it with me for inter house music comp and he (unlike my brass band ) insisted that it be played slowly with full tone and gravitas,..and with a soft lingering ending.

It goes above the staff a couple of times but is unusual music now and an ideal vehicle for a young player with good tone and control who can put some 'music' and expression into it.....a complete contrast to modern 'fireworks' solo pieces.
