Have an upcoming gig where we are playing "Hoe Down", Candide", Buckaroo Holiday", and "Rhapsody in Blue"...I am playing 2nd trumpet. I received all of the parts and they are in Bb. Is this the actual key, or did they send me the "transposed" parts that sometimes come with orchestral works? I would really like to have the parts in the correct key to utilize. anyone know anything about this? Thank you, Neil

PS. If you have the original parts and these are not them, would you mind sharing?

Candide is definitely a Bb part, not sure about the others.

Are you sure about this? Is this in the 1926 or the 1942 orchestration?

My experience with Copland is that the originals are written for Bb trumpet.

Rhapsody in Blue has some A transposition every time that I have seen it.

Same here.
Was fortunate enough to play a suite by Copland.
Parts were in Bb.
Played on C's since the other pieces we had were easier on C.

I've played all but "Candide" and all were in Bb. I don't recall if "Rhapsody" had an A section as has been said but I certianly didn't change horns in any case.

The Ferde Grofe rental of Rhapsody in Blue does have Tumpet in A transposition in it a couple of times. The first after the first extended piano solo and again in the slow section.

I am more than likely going to play on C. Gotta wait and see what horn the Principal player wants to go with....

We did a similar program last season. It was the Grofe arrangement with the "A" sections. This music is very bandy and it was really comfortable on Bb.
Maybe it's because I studied in Cleveland but as principal I like when the section plays Bb, even if I'm playing C. In a way, it helps keep me honest. Maybe your principal will be open to it.
Either way have fun.

The decision to use Bb or C horns is always personal or made as a section. But if there ever was a program that favored the Bb then this is it.
