Respect and civility; anyone else notice a decline of these qualities in our TH discourse recently? Perhaps I am just an old overly sensitive softie...

You are an incredible jerk. How dare you say something like this?

Joke.

I think it is actually much more civil than when we had the R&P forum.

But if you think about it we are all trumpet players and many trumpet players have a big ego.

Better now than in '06 or so. TH sandbox bullies ruined things. Players whose continued presence here would have been a boon said pffft and left.

Ed,
Your sentiment is understandable, but where could that eventually lead? If lack of civility and respect on the part of a member leads not to response in kind but instead to polite respectful replies, is there a chance that respect and civility in the forum might generally increase?

Yea... It's not just in TH. Have you noticed the breakdown in our society?

I seem to remember an experiment done quite a few years ago pertaining to population and civility. Went something like this:

A room with all the best food, cleanest water, all the toys and activities that a population of rats could thrive in was constructed. It was tended to, meticulously by the experimenters. They placed a stable population of rats in it and monitored it for about a year. The rats thrived! They played together, got along, shared food and even slept together, commune style. Then they started to add 1 more rat a day, everyday. For a period of time, things were the same. Then as they added more and more rats, things started to change. There were more and more fights, less community interaction. Then they started to fight over the food! Even though there was more than enough provided, the fights continued. Over time as more rats were added, the fights became more violent and severe, eventually leading to "gangs" of rats stalking and killing other rats for sport. Rats became more and more withdrawn, the family units broke down much quicker, fights broke out almost continually even though, all the amenities to make rat life happy and productive were still in place, total rat chaos was firmly in place.

So the question begs to be asked... Does any of this sound familiar ?

I think not.

Such people should either be ignored or banned as violators of the rules of the forum. The word bully was used above. Being kind to bullies in the hope they will become nice people usually results in an increase in bullying rather than otherwise.

I would have to agree with DaveH on this matter. Bullying should not be rewarded or in any way or encouraged. Better to "nip it at the bud" and discourage it.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

The question: "Respect and civility; anyone else notice a decline of these qualities in our TH discourse recently?"

No.

Getting rid of the old R&P forum did much to improve this issue on this website.

So, in my opinion, respect and civility are better than in the past - with a few exceptions...

Everybody, and everything, sucks. There, now that we've gotten that out of the way...

I'd certainly like to believe it would! As my wife puts it (and she is most likely paraphrasing others), "You get more with honey, than vinegar." Well, I've gotten well along in life and found by personal experience that antagonizing confrontation achieves very little.
