Just having some fun on a lovely morning. I think we ought to bat some clips back and forth.

We can pretend there's no "real" forums out there.

I bought this Capri some weeks ago from a TH'er, & she's working out a-okay. 1st valve is a little wonky. But I got a trumpet rod (had to special order one -- no lie) and swabbed the valve casing for all I'm worth. Still it is a bit temperamental, but getting better.

So here's me messing around with Brandt 1

I appreciated your vid. As for your invitation; cool idea! For me, though, I am not confident my skill with instruments and technology is quite "there" yet.

Very nice, as always, Richard.

Questions:

1. Still using the Mac for video? Excellent tone (you... Dennis Wick mpc?) and lack of distortion (recording device.) I'm posting an Acer low-end notebook recording for comparison (heh.)

2. Your front door is open -- nice day in Casper, or just windy as usual?

3. Christmas stockings still up? Curiosity is getting the best of me.

WxJeff,

One cannot help but wonder why your dog just doesn't leave! I believe my Mrs. was close to howling several times early in my comeback efforts...

Guys,
I may be getting my nerve up to join you in posting some recordings. I just recorded a tune while watching my trumpet playing stink-o-meter and it wasn't completely pegged to the right! But I do have a question for you. I have an old arrangement of Tijuana Taxi with a copyright date of 1966. Do you know if I could get in trouble by recording and posting that? I just don't know much about this stuff.

Hiya Buddy,

No. Mac died 6 months out of warranty. No lie. It's a PC. I use Windows Movie Maker with a Logitech mic that stands on the table nicely. Mic cost $25 or $30 ---> http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-981-000246-USB-Desktop-Microphone/dp/B002RL84OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331776022&sr=8-1. Yes, the dreaded Denis Wick 4. It has a lot going for it, but jeez. Someone on TH called it "the old stovepipe." They were spot on. I'm going to buy a 4B, or wait a bit 'cause Dale is trying a new mouthpiece. Gonna see how he likes it.

A nice day in Casper, not too windy. Wind, yikes!!

Yes. Those are my Christmas stockings the family had as a kid. I'm hyper nostalgic, and I love Christmas.

Jeff, nice, oh you got a singer too! The camera I used has a mic like on your laptop. That's why I had to go with an alternative.

Oh, I like your noodling. Very much. I can't do that for beans. You listened to Chase and I didn't. See?! And am so happy you have a nice Getzen again. Do you miss your Chicago Kantstul?

Yeah, we rehearsed the Dvorak tonight along with Giannini's 3rd -- both final movements. Hard parts in each. The Giannini is harder. At the beginning, I had the 1st part then foisted it upon another guy in lieu of the 2nd cornet part. Traded 1st cornet on Dvorak for the 1st trumpet part. Smart move.

The opening of the Dvorak is one of the easier parts. Only trumpets open the finale. The hard part of the is making sure the low D is in tune and not sounding like a gaggle of B-17's flying overhead.

Jim, don't think the hand of Herb is going to squash you. Go for it if it's fun for you and propels you forward in your music making. What happens in the Comeback Forum stays in the Comeback Forum

Jim:

We had quite a discussion recently on one of the other forums here about dogs and whether or not our playing pains them. I've also done some Internet research and opinions are split. I think because I am the Alpha Male in the house he just always wants to be with me. Every once in awhile when I'm practicing he'll leave the room, but mostly he just sits and howls. More recently I moved my music managerie to the basement and that's helping him (and making my wife happy.)

I don't think there are any copyright issues with an individual playing out of a published book of commercial/copyrighted tunes and posting them for personal use... I think the determining factor is if you are attempting to make money with that production (clearly we're not!)

Richard:

Thanks for the update. I'll look for a mic that will help!

Well, it will be interesting to see if this works. When I listen to myself, I think I hear a Purdue technology grad 8 1/2 months into a comeback, after a forty year layoff. How about that!

Wow. Crisp initial attacks. Tres nice, there.

Man, jump on some lessons to take what you got working for you and have it explode for you. And apologies if you're already studying with someone. If not, find 'em or Skype 'em.

Yeah! You just keep at it, and stuff will fall into place if you're following someone who knows the road.

In a bit, repost it up tempo with that latin lilt thing going on.

Good job! Have fun. Keep blowing!

Thank you for the encouragement, Richard. I am intending to keep at it; having too much fun to stop! I am looking forward to your next post.

Good news: outdoor recording with a cheap Acer notebook mic worked out pretty good.

Still hacking through Rich Willey's "Scale Force." Good for the brain, not so good for the ego.

Waddle on, friends.

Jeff,
Outdoor recording, see, you can get away with it. If I tried that the neighbors would sic their dogs on me! Your attacks and clarity of tone were great. Your recording quality was much like mine when I was trying to use the built-in laptop mic. Yours was some better since you did not direct your trumpet at the computer. I'm now using a semi-expensive "yeti" USB mic from Blue Microphones, which is a big improvement. Richard uses one that was less expensive, but his recording quality seems to be every bit as good as mine. Thanks for posting!

Thanks, Jim. I try to time my outdoor practicing so as not to be too disturbing (this was a 30 min session about 5:30 p. m.) Yeah, I need to get out get one of those mics that RichardWy recommended.

Jeff,

Yes, outdoors works better. No clue why. Well, the irons in the fire. Keep stoking!! Some nice lines mid-way or 2/3rd the way through your piece. Sound like you like it well enough to work it up. Pieces like that with large intervals in a single line brings out the hammer on the old ego. You are right!

Good to be doing this again with you.

Indeed, Richard. What did we do last time... share clips on a Google Group, I think?

Later this week I might try that form of technology: load just an audio file to Google docs (perhaps with a .pdf of the music being played) and post that link here.

...or we could continue to saturate YouTube

Hi, guys. I got this a short time ago, and it seems to be working out nicely. I am playing it with a Blessing 3C. The clip and arrangement is from the old 60s songbook I'm so fond of. And Richard, I'm working the bugs out of video creation. You just keep compelling me to learn new stuff...(thank you!)

Are you in the position or do you an interested in getting a teacher? They help loads at all times, and especially during that getting back into phase of a comeback.

Keep blowing!
