Total guess.... He played a Yamaha for a while... that receiver looks like it might be one of their horns... but it is a TOTAL guess.

Way too early for a Yamaha. I think it's a Conn, I just don't know which model and if you look close enough you'll see the leadpipe receiver-to-bell brace is angled, so that's not your typical Connstellation. Doesn't have the Connstellation trigger but looks like the leadpipe of a Connstellation. Could be that Italian Meazzi Connstellation copy he played, but doesn't look like any pics I can find of that model online.

According to OJ's trumpet page, Woody played Meazzi (Italian copy of the Constellation) Maybe that is the horn you are speaking of.

Yeah, that makes sense... I've seen some of those nice old conns without the first valve slide...maybe someone knows which model...

I only find small photos, so it's hard to see, but it could be the Meazzi.

This the top of mine, compare and please tell us:

Yep, that's the horn. There is also a picture of Woody with it on page 10 of the most recent ITG Journal. Like the horn pictured above, it has the slanted bell-to-leadpipe braces and no vertical brace at the tuning slide area. Also in the pic in the ITG you can see a slight hint of the engraving. Woody's horn has Conn style waterkeys though.

How does this horn play, Krax?

Wow, that's a beautiful horn! I'll bet it's a great player...at least Woody sounds killer on it!

It is a great playing trumpet with lots of personality and a very dark sound. If I had to play lead I would not choose this trumpet, no way, but for second or even more third or fourth chair, it has done good for me. And as a solo trumpet... if I wish to produce an almost flugel like sound on a trumpet, then this horn is "the horn".

My immidiate impression whenever I pick it up after some time not playing it, is that it is a fast trumpet - valves are light and fast and it is very easy to articulate notes. What is bad is that intonation takes some time and work getting used to, notes are moving around a bit. I guess it is the effect of the wide bell throat, which probably also causes the very dark sound.

I have it confirmed from Romeo Orsi that they made these horns called "Oro", but these are not the only Meazzis out there, there are other student models too. I don't know who made them. Anyway, when I e-mailed Orsi some years ago they said that they still have all the tooling, so if one would want to have a trumpet like that of Woody Shaw it should be possible to order one from them.

Thanks for the great info krax! And thanks for mentioning that Romeo Orsi would still make a Woody Shaw type horn...I'll look into that in the future. All the best, Lex

I have heard this is the horn Woody really played. He was sponcered by Bach and Yamaha, so he'd play those horns when people were watching, but I've heard most recordings were done on this horn.
