Small venue room inside Foyles. Only about 60 people, all on guest list, so not jammed or any gate crashers. No stage, grand piano and one music stand. I was fortunate that most people did not wish to sit in the front row. So I got to see and hear her for just under an hour from about 8 feet away.
She announced her selections... all on C trumpet... all played straight off vocal scores in their original keys. A truncated Grieg cycle, some Sibelius, a German lullaby, Songs from the Auvergne. Steller accompanist named Gunther Flagstad (?). Tine plays Thursday at Albert Hall.
She suggested that some of the vocal lit works much better than others on trumpet. She sounded like she was singing. Lyrical, expressive, sensitive. Incredible dynamic control and tonal inflection. She never sounded like she was fighting the instrument... every sound had a gorgeous resonance to it. She said something very interesting too, about dealing with the inevitable technical problems. She always looked for musical solutions to technical issues, rather than focusing on making a technical exercise out of difficult passages. Very refreshing.... _________________ High Brass by Eclipse, Selmer, Olds, B&H, Conn

Not that good! Sadly, I'm on the wrong side of the pond for that.
Very nice album - I got it several weeks ago. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

This actually is not surprising to me. I've noticed quite consistently, that the top-notch musicians are all primarily focused on music- even when confronted with 'technical' problems. Glad to hear this teaching has beaten geographical obstacles though! |
