Harrelson Bravura vs Carol Brass 8880 (with sound clips)

guys i would like to say that this has been one of the best and most fascinating, and productive, discussions in a long while.
many here have lots of horns. i would love to hear more a/b comparisons. the schilke 5 as opposed to the schilke 6. the 1 against the 5. i wouldn't be bored until we ran through all the schilkes and yamahas and kanstuls and then we would have to consider some of the old manufacture.
anyone gets in the mood, by all means.. chuck

From the recording it's really hard to tell. The best way to tell would be hearing it live in a large room or auditorium, as well as in an ensemble.

Despite i'm fan of Carol Brass horns i prefer the Harrelson sound but after putting the tuner in front of the speaker the intonation on the bravura is not as good as the Carols's one except the low G too flat on the Carol.

I think that because your are not sufficiently acclimated to the Carol.

I had the same problem with the low register of my Calicchio when i received it and now after 3 weeks its far better.

For me the Carol CTR-5000L-YLS-Bb-L is the easier to play in tune of all the horn i had or have.

As previously said i think this post is one of the more interesting post since months, thanks afp.

This thread has been great!!! It has really helped me sort out some things. My range and endurance improvement happened when I discovered the right visualization for a high arched tongue. That and I have been getting in a couple hours practice six days a week since January.

It will be interesting to see how it affects my playing with the more open leadpipe on the Bravura. I'll make videos that show old and new leadpipe side by side.

BTW. I think there is value to making these recordings on a decent mic The Zoom H2 sells for around $170 on Amazon. It allows us to hear things that we wouldn't pick up with a typical video camera. On a couple of my High Gs, you can hear a very slight fuzziness develop in the tone as the note is sustained. I don't think that would be heard on a typical video cam recording, and I don't think it would be heard live while leading a section.

I am sure there are good video cams and there are better mica than the Zoom H2. However, recording oneself with a good mic and then listening to is quite revealing, as we have all seen here.

I do need to record some more technical stuff on the two horn, like that pure evil Clarke's version of Carnival of Venice. I can at least get the first two parts. The second and third, not so much........

Hi: i have just bought a Carol 6280 in beautiful satin lacquer. I'm not an experienced player like you and the model is different, but i've had the same impressions on the horn. Very clean, clear and accurate on the high register, miss something in the lower notes but all in all an excellent horn for the price. My main horn is a Kanstul 1001 and the Carol has definitely less core to the sound, is less "vibrant", but is also easier to play on the high register and maybe the slotting, too, is easier.
I've made a short clip with my Zoom 4hd to test the sound of the Carol, but no A\B comparison.

At jazz band last night, I was again complemented on my sound on the Carol. It will be interesting to see if the more open pipe on the Bravura improves my sound in a similar way.
