That is funny! I am sure he was figuring out his tongue arch and aperture setting when he hit that last note! Great player! _________________ Bill

Or maybe Derek practiced correctly, hours and hours a day for years until it all worked correctly by habit - NAHHH!
I'm sure he developed that ability by spending all his time on threads like this. |

Probably more truth to this statement than just about anything else on this thread.
We brass players (general statement) tend to be a bit impatient. We want to be better players, NOW !!! I want to play high, like Maynard (Happy Birthday Boss), I want to Sound like "Doc", etc... And we want our problems and bad playing habits fixed, right now. Just tell me me something magical. Tell me to play a passage of music so my problems will just disappear.
ALL of the Greats and Virtuoso's we listen to, admire and love, didn't get there overnight. This instrument we play demands so much of our time in order to play correctly that we sometimes just get frustrated with ourselves. We know what needs to be done. Even the new players, actually really know what needs to be done. Diligent, purposeful and consistent practice. NO one will be a virtuoso overnight, or in a week, or in a year !!!
Stay thirsty my friends, be patient, and play your horn. _________________ Jeff Garrett

The importance of lots of smart practice and playing cannot be over emphasized. There is no shortcut.
I had a significant breakthrough in range and endurance this past January, and I have been able to keep it and build on it by doing this:
Get up early, workout on treadclimber and/or bowflex, go to work, come home, eat dinner, and become very tired...........then go practice for two hours anyway. Repeat the next day. And the next day.
I would improve faster if I could find more time to practice.................. _________________ Harrels VPS Summit

though I do not recommend it for someone who started and stuck with brass instruments, Schilke has made an a cup mouthpiece which is a close to a good tone "screamer" you can find (if you sound-sleeve it at least) . However I still say these should be used if you really need it and only then, such as in the case of a multi-instrumentalist since you havent a huge chunk of practice time. but if you really need it look for the Schilke 14a4a or the 13a4a , they work but dont rely on it _________________ Killing my lips on anything but Flute or horn |

Virtually all Wedge mouthpieces, even the shallow cup lead pieces, allow a good tone. It is almost like cheating. My current Wedge gives me the upper range and endurance support of a Bach 12, while giving me the tone of a Bach 5. _________________ Harrels VPS Summit

true, thats what i mean its more for people who need to get an upper range quicker than someone who spends all their time on trumpet. Although I've been told that since the deeper the cup, the better the tone tends to be, that it is suppose to be vice-versa -shrug-[/quote] _________________ Killing my lips on anything but Flute or horn |

and don't buy a shallow mouthpiece to make up for your range. your compromising the quality of your sound for range. |

Exactly, if your only instrument is trumpet then you got all your focus on it to build range yourself _________________ Killing my lips on anything but Flute or horn |

Going back through all the pages of this debate, it certainly makes me chuckle. Trumpet players really are notorious for their "bro-science".
I suppose the heart of the debate lies between trumpet player dogma, and the laws of physics. Ultimately though, what really matters in the real world are the results...not the technique somebody uses to get there. This is why the really smart person will experiment with every technique under the sun, in order to find those which work the best. The science behind it is largely irrelevant.
Does Randy Johnson really think about the rate of rotation on the baseball when he throws his slider? Does he think about how the air is flowing around the seams? Nope. And neither does anybody else, because they don't really care.
Hall of Famer, by the way. |

What makes you think that he didn't? I'll bet that Johnny Sain did and he is up there for the best pitching coach of all time. _________________ Either is fine. My chops always feel great

You're right, Brian. Randy is up there on the mound with a calculator and a chalkboard, running the equations for his next pitch.
I should know better than to jump into these discussions. |
