http://www.taylortrumpets.com/soapbox-magazine-article.html

I am often ranting about this non-sense myself so nice to see someone that sells trumpets actually put out truth and not marketing! Gota love this level of honesty.

Truth and not marketing? This is coming from a guy who sells trumpets and it is now posted on his website. This "article" could be summed up in one sentence to say - people are told to play Bach and they should play what works for them.

Well, yes, he makes and sells brass instruments, and has written about orthodoxy. By that I mean that what he says is true: Most teachers in my area, for example, (Bay Area, CA) send students in to buy B*** trumpets. (Using Mr. Taylor's abbreviations)

There is nothing wrong with that, they are very good trumpets. Are they better than anything else? Not necessarily.

It seems to me that B*** (I like this system of abbreviation) won the battle long ago in convincing people that their product was somehow better suited to orchestral work than Besson, Benge, Yamaha, or whatever.

It's the player that produces the sound in concert with the instrument, not the other way 'round.

Same thing happens here (Houston); a majority of band directors reccomend Bach to the kids. I think one reason is fairly simple: a band director who is not a trumpet major might not be as familiar with other brands, even those that we trumpet players are acquainted with, and Bach (and Yamaha, another popular choice here by directors) are well known and readily available. If I were teaching band in a school, I might do the same sort of thing if a student asked about saxes, I might immediately think of Selmer or Yamaha.

And to Kirk: "truth" can be a subjective term. Because an opinion happens to agree with yours does not necessarily make it "truth."
