I saw that Marek is in the Market place looking for flugel mutes. I don't get the idea that he really checks out the forum but thought it was a subject would interest our good friend Rich

I've never had a reason to mute a flugelhorn .... but a few years ago I bought a used trombone that came with a cup and a straight mute. Somehow I figured out that they did more or less fit my flugel.

why would you mute a flugel anyway?

just curious.

-------------
I just checked back here and saw the reply with the ???????
so what is the question?

I thought maybe it was my reference to Rich that didn't make sense,
-- --Were there some posts deleted here on the C/F forum this week?
Did I make it all up or was there an animated discussion on the merits of the flugelhorn?

Because you noticed that Rich Willey was in the audience?

[Yeah, there goes that Rich Wiley (notice the misspelling) dishing it out again!]

glad you liked that, Rich.
--We're getting ready to bop out with some duets so I thought of you and just checked in here 1st. I was going to try them on trombone, but maybe I'll go with flugel & cup mute instead. We'll get some sound clips (ouch)

I use a Jo-Ral Trombone Bubble Harmon-type mute in my flugel. It is free blowing and gives a nice tone for pieces like 'Moonlight in Vermont". I tried the Jo-Ral Harmon -style mute for flugel, but it is an odd thing, with three corks like a straight mute, and a bubble on the end, but I didn't like it... jbqd

I heard Art Farmer using a harmon on a flugel. Just like anything else Art did on the flugel, it was warm, tasty and thought provoking. I went out and got the same mute that Art played (the same type jbquick speaks of). I don't get the same sound Art got though, it must be the horn.

Believe it or not, I actually have a Manny Klein ssh-ssh! Mute for my Flugel. Basically, I have a practice studio where I play, but if I want to play in my apartment, I have to use a mute. If I want to practice something on flugel that I forgot to work on in the studio, I pop in the H&B and I'm good to go. It's reasonably free blowing and in tune up to about D above high C.

In other parts of the world, the flugel is more than just jazz instrument.

British style brass band music often calls for mutes for the flugel. Apparently the composer/arranger wants a specfic tone quality. In overture to Mack and Mabel, the flugel has a counter melody to to a muted solo cornet melody. The flugel part calls for a mute I guess to "match" the cornet. It sounds better when the flugel is muted.

As a side comment, there are even brass band pieces that call for mutes for Eb tenor horns, euponiums and even tubas.

FWIW

If only I could type and spell I wouldn't spend half my time editing.

I got a Jo-ral Harmon for Flugelhorn. It fits my Cuesnon great. The only problem was that the corks were similar to a straight mute and did not wrap around the end like a typical harmon. I took the old corks off and put a strip of sheet cork on to seal the bell and it works great. Has a deep tone quality and plays in tune well also. Very expensive though.

I heard Maynard Ferguson play But Beautiful at a concert once using a harmon mute in his flugel.
