I just purchased a German Kurt Scherzer rotary trumpet in D. It is very unique in that the leadpipe goes into the 3rd valve like on a piston trumpet. On most rotary trumpets the leadpipe goes to the first valve. The rotary valves are oriented vertically so you play it like a piston trumpet. It has a very tight wrap, so it seems tiny compared to a modern horn. Best of all, it plays great

Initial research suggests that it is pre 1955, as I think Kurt Scherzer retired around then, but I need to confirm that. I can find very little information about these horns on the net. Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave

You remember me? I used to own one of these in Eb/D. It came with another set of slide(s). Nice horns, rather indicative of how smaller trumpets used to be setup: small bore, brighter sound.

Made in the western side of Germany, many of his designs were associated with Adolf Scherbaum. And yes, there's not a lot more information out there about these instruments. Piechler appears to have been trumpet player, teacher and composer/writer of works for trumpet.

I can put you in touch with the guy who bought mine if you like - if you don't have the Ed slide(s) he may be able to help you get some copied. (It didn't come in a black velvet bag did it? (in which case, it's the one I used to own)

cheers

Andy

Hi Andy,

It actually came in a hard case, and no I do not have the Eb slides. I would be very interested in being in contact with the person you bought yours from. Thanks for the information. Any idea of the vintage? Is it true the maker retired in 1955?

Dave

There are/were several manufacturers, but Kurt Scherzer was (one of) the first. He retired in 1954, died in 1962. His successor was Hermann Sandner, who retired in 1994 and sold the company to Bernd Dorfner: http://www.dorfner-musikinstrumente.de

I think I have the "b-flat" big brother. And I will have to look at it again, because if I remember right it could be a B-flat/C. Anyway, I will try and post a picture for you thread. If you lived close to Singapore, I could make you a set of slides in a very short while. I have had to order in a lot of supplies for the older horns to keep my own collection.

Thanks for all the info and photos. I have no idea of the actual value of this horn. There are so few of them around that I could not find any web based transactions to base it on. However, I played the horn and liked it better than my Ganter Eb/D, so I paid $800 for it.

The horn slots very well and has a nice sound. It is a little more brilliant than my Ganter, but is not bright. The tuning is excellent and the notes, especially below the staff, speak very well, which is not always my experience with the smaller horns. The 4th space E needs alternate 1-2 fingering to bring it up in tune with a regular mouthpiece, but it lines up perfectly with a slightly shorter "C" shank. The sound is big for such a small bell. I am not sure that I can make a clip with sound quality that will do the horn justice, but I will see what I can do.

Cheers,
Dave

That is a cool horn. I still have my eyes on a Ganschorn but at 4000 Euro or so it's a bit difficult to swing that!

I need to visit to check it out

Best,
T
