I mean, if you had said 42, JobyMF, I would have subscribed to that, but hey, 24 is just the age (almost) anything goes... *sigh* fond memories

And good luck finding that magic threesome, i.e. you, the horn AND the woman who likes both.

I have 2 choices when practicing @ home: either a) close the door to the room (other side of the house, no connecting walls), or b) put in the yamaha silent-brass mute.

However, she (my wife) does attend concerts with me (although she prefers country-western music), and can now tell the difference between the trumpet, cornet & pocket-trumpet. (She actually prefers the cornet ! Good girl !)

She does think that 3 working horns and 1 display model (my uncles old Henri Gautier Virtuoso) are enough . I tend to agree, but keep looking for a Boston 3-star or key-C horn.)

Many years ago, one of my first few dates with my now Wife, I gave her a compt front row seat to a sold out concert.

She knew I played Trumpet but, never heard me play.

I was playing the 2nd book and playing lead was the lead from Les Brown's Band of Renown who had all of the solos etc.

He played so well, I wanted to stop playing and just listen to him.

At the end of the concert, the lead said he had to go and catch a flight to another gig as he sneaked backstage.

The crowd gave us a standing ovation and then the Music Director introduced us to the audience.

Not seeing the lead, he introduced me 1st from the Trumpet section...I stood up as the crowd cheered and I threw my hands in the air holding my Trumpet in one hand as if "I was the man" all in an attempt to impress the Woman of my dreams.

Driving home my future Wife to be said something like..."Wow...you can really play!"

In my attempt to be humble (while still being dishonest) I said something like..."Thanks, I usually play better...I had an off night".

Approx. (5) years after we were married, I told her the truth...it wasn't me...

She then stated..."I knew it wasn't you the 1st day I heard you practice."

Dan, your story reminds me that my stock answer when my young sons wanted to know what I did in the Air Force was, "I flew an SD-6."

When they grew old enough to go to the library and couldn't find anything about my "plane," I was forced to admit that an SD-6 is a steel desk with six drawers.

Don't let it go to your head - it's the Constellation

No seriously, congrats on 35; it's a milestone not many make anymore

the wife doesn't mind the practice...its the DOG. I close the doors and the wife can barely hear me at the other end of the house or downstairs...however, the DOG immediately begins to howl...then he'll trot up and come in (if I've left the door open) and just "sings" along. Can't tell IF he's in pain or just playing along. But, he's impacting my practice as I don't want to "hurt" the poor animal.

My wife ...

... likes it when I practice (although she "screens it out")

... encouraged me to buy a flugel

... encouraged me to buy a C

... pretty much demanded that I buy a picc

... goes with me to ITG

... goes with me to Ohio Trumpet Guild meetings

... tries to go to any performance of mine that she can

Of course, when she listens to recitals (think Manny Laureano or Joe Burgstaller) she'll turn to me after some of the more challenging pieces and ask, "Can you play that?"

Then again, at one OTG meeting, Ashley Hall did an outstanding job with Carnival of Venice with the accompanist pushing the tempo ... Susie didn't bother asking me if I could have done that.

This whole topic has made me smile knowingly,...however, you all have nothing to worry about really.................

....................Now, ME, on the other hand, sees this from the other side, so to speak, since my wife is a highly skilled all round musician who was the musical director of our band for many years! When I 'practice' she is very supportive and helpful,..but whoa betide me if I play casually in the house or just pick up an instrument and 'tootle' for a moment,...THAT'S when the icy remarks start to flow!.....such as; "play it properly and see if it sounds better"....." the metronome is on the piano"......."there's a newer version with corrections"......and my favourite; "have you been taking your multi-vitamin?"

I like that Bob - last night at band practice our deputy-MD was taking the band, and gave the flugelhorn a very hard time with a part he'd been struggling with....the deputy-MD being the fluglehorn player's wife!

I think the final exchange went something along the lines of "I'll make sure you take it home to practice!"

I guess that's one advantage to a non-musical wife....

Cheers,
Roger

My lovely wife bought me a Getzen Genesis for our first anniversary.

She is my biggest fan.

She convinced me to play in church.

She doesn't like screaming/screeching (on the trumpet).

She never complains about how many instruments I own. Actually, she never complains about anything. YES, she is a woman!

And she is the finest human being I have ever met.

jhatpro, I hear something like this from my wife when I'm practicing the horn in the house with my family around:

"Why are you playing your trumpet again? Why don't you go out to the garage and write more songs on your keyboard and make us some more money?"

It's always the bottom line with her...

So invited a few of my trumpet friends over to show off my new VRII... We're all in my living room and each of my friends plays a bit on their own horn, then switches to the VRII and says something along the lines of "this is the best horn ever." Through all of this, my wife is down the hall reading with the door open.

We get to my turn, I pop my Jim Manley mouthpiece in, and play the solo part from Maynard's Gonna Fly Now. I rip up to the double B at the end, it slots perfectly (Yay! VRII!) and I throw a bit of a shake on it before release. Exactly one beat after the release I hear the door at the end of the hall shut loudly.

All in all my wife is pretty trumpet friendly, being a musician herself. I constantly apologize for the hell I put her through with all my high note BS, and she always says that it doesn't bother her. She later claimed she shut the door to keep the cats in with her...

Guess you haven't noticed (yet?) the high-note stuff really doesn't impress anyone ... 'cept for (maybe) some other Trumpet-player.

Oh, well ....

I've ben sitting here in my kitchen in Attleboro, Massachusetts with my lovely wife, Anne, several feet away reading some of these fantastic posts. We both agree that this qualifies as a two-thumbs-up!!!!!

P.S. My wife of 28 years has been totally supportive of my trumpet/cornet playing over the years - all the brass-playing angst, mouthpiece safaris, etc, etc. taken aside.

I had just begun my comeback when I started dating my current wife. She's a singer but not a musician. Anyway, I bring her to my apartment one night. She sees the horn and, against my better judgement she talks me into playing something for her. I can't remember what I played but I'll never forget what she said: "it's hard to play trumpet, isn't it?

Tomorrow is our 25 anniversary!

My Baby plays drums; the guitar; and she bought me a Yamaha YTR 8340EM Professional Model Bb Trumpet and (2) Monette Prana Mouthpieces. She supports any trumpet playing I choose to do 110%.
