Just out of curiosity, how many here own a bugle?
When looking on ebay, I saw them going for £20, for that I might get one just for a laugh. _________________ My first reply was witty and

I was the bugler for my troop. I still have my official Boy Scout horn; now around 48 years old!

I've got a cheapy Chinese made bugle I bought off of eBay for $20 when I was in high school. It's a hunk of junk...in the key of B...hahhahaa!
I do a fair amount of Taps gigs, and have subbed a couple of times at a local race track. I've been considering purchasing a Getzen Field Trumpet, but just can't justify it...the Taps gigs are usually free...the racetrack gig pays well, but I rarely get to do it. It's just easier using my trumpet.

I have an official Rexcraft Boy Scout Bugle up in the attic, but I'd take my trumpet to any taps performance I was asked to do. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |

I have a very nice Kanstul Bb field trumpet. Most people call them bugles, though. I have used it numerous times for Taps. I also have an old U.S. Regulation field trumpet and one of those cheap Indian copies of a British bugle, which plays reasonably well with a real mouthpiece. Here's a pic of the Kanstul...

I have a Besson bugle just for Last Post and Reveille at the yearly Remebrance Service. Just think it sounds better than trumpet or cornet for the occasion . _________________ Blow in the Little End. Noise Comes Out the Big End. Simples!

| I have my dad's old Boy Scout bugle. It's in bad shape and I cant remember the last time I tried to play it. For a while, we polished it up as well as we could and used it as decoration on the fireplace hearth. |

I have a Kanstul G bugle, which I use when playing solo taps. I use the Zeus 900 for playing echo taps. _________________ Flip Oakes Wild Thing

I have two Buescher bugles. One is a Legionnaire bugle and the other is a M1892 that was sold for scouting purposes, etc.

I too have a Kanstul Bflat field trumpet which I use for numerous BAA events. My only issue with it is that I cannot get the flat out of it. Tuning slide all the way in and it's still flat on a tuner. I have tried several different MP brands and sizes to no avail. _________________ Veteran comebacker!

I just dug mine out and checked the tuning. It needs about 1/4" pull on the tuning slide to center the tuner (blind test). That's with the mouthpiece I normally use on it, a Bach 6BM, which has a 26 throat and 24 backbore. _________________ Olde Towne Brass

I've got two, an ancient one from King, and an official boy scout bugle by Rexcraft.
I also have a King K20 and a Kanstul Symphony model in G, but they are just my drum corps stuff. |

Hello all,
I have a BSA regulation bugle. It plays terribly. I recently got to play an old Ludwig...Same sound. But then I got a chance to play an old Conn...There was a great horn. Played well and not like a bugle at all. _________________ Christian K. Peters

You have a K20 thats awesome. everyone tells me those are the best playing G bugles ever. any truth to that statement? even considering 2valve vs 3valve. whats a Symphony model kanstul in G? never heard of that bugle. I've heard of the other kanstul bugles before just not that kind. _________________ Yamaha ytr-8335RGM Xeno

Not exactly... Bugles are basically more conical than a Trumpet or Field Trumpet which is essentially more cylindrical.
Some would argue, it's the "key". "G" being a Bugle and "Bb" being a Trumpet (field), that is sort of correct, but there are Bugles in the key of "Bb" ! So now were back to the construction.
A trumpet is a Trumpet, a Cornet is a Cornet, a Bugle is a Bugle and a Flugelhorn is a Flugelhorn. They are all there very own, distinctly different instrument in both construction and sound even though, they all look, "similar".
So speaking about "Bugles" (I'll stick with "G"), valved or not, they are closer akin to Cornets than Trumpets in construction. Yes the key of "G" is obtained with the addition of more tubing, but the tubing taper needs to be proportional for correct quality of sound (and playability). If a manufacture were to simply add tubing, you get the correct key, but not the sound. Dynasty made this mistake when it went to the three valve "G" Bugle. We who play Bugles call them, Dy-Nasty.
My personal favorites are the Olds piston rotor, Olds Ultra-tone II, two valve, and the Kanstul three valve. I also own a two valve Dynasty Piccolo Soprano.
An interesting tid-bit; If you want to see how a "G" Bugle plays, pick up your Bb Cornet (or Trumpet) hold the third valve down and play. You'll get an idea of how they sound and play. They are a bit more challenging than there Bb, C, Db, and Eb brothers. Even though the sound out of the bell is a minor third lower (than the Bb horns) the effort is the same. A high"C" is a high "C", etc... _________________ Jeff Garrett

Its a great horn, I prefer it to the Olds Ultratone personally.
The Symphony Model must have been a super custom thing. Mine was made for the Cavaliers, 3 valves, the soloist in '02 used it on the field. Against the current Kanstul sop models, I take this horn |

Im going to get a soprano one day off ebay or something. I really to get a few bugles just for collecting purpose and to show people who dont know what they are. 2 valve sopranos and valve rotor horns just look cool to me. Had the oppurtunity to buy a few but just kept forgetting to place that final bid and lost them. too bad one day though _________________ Yamaha ytr-8335RGM Xeno
