Hi

I thought this thread could be fun and informative to read.

What tip(s) were you advised by some pro ?

Here's one of mine :

Wynton Marsalis : learn to play soft. When you can, learn to play even softer and so on.....

Forgive my paraphrasing;

Pick four numbers between 1 and 12. Each represents a note starting from A. Play all the permutations of that number, eg; 1,2,3,4 - 1,3,4,2 - 1,4,2,3 - 1,2,4,3 - 1,3,2,4 - 1,4,3,2 - 2,1,3,4 -etc.

Apply these patterns with different rhythmic displacements, over changes.

This is almost a lifetimes work.

- Terrance Blanchard via Arnold Schoenberg

Sit at the piano and play a C Major triad. Play [slowly] every note from a chromatic scale from your lowest note to your highest and find the notes that resonate with you. Each chord sounds different and #11 on C Major triad in the lowest octave may not resonate with you as much as #11 on a D Major triad. Work the 4 triads [Major, minor, augmented, diminished] and then move onto quadrads, quintads, and larger voicings.

- Scott Tinkler

The most uninteresting interval in music is a perfect octave.

- Marc Hannaford via Elliot Carter

It's just as important to be a great guy as it is to be a great player.

Me (at a concert in college): Well I messed up a bunch

Bobby Shew: Don't put yourself in the $&*^house, you did just fine.

Then at dinner he blew at a dollar bill across the table showing a directed air stream; pretty amazing.

Masterclass with Mark Niehaus.

Mark puts $20 on the music stand with the 8th, 2 16th exercise from Arban.

"Let's talk about accuracy. Whoever plays and doesn't chip one single note, keeps the 20 bucks."

10 players tried. All failed. Some people early, some people on the last bar.

Mark steps up, plays it perfect.

"Most people don't have a trumpet problem...everybody can play all the licks. Most people have a concentration problem. Improve your concentration and improve your trumpet playing."

Here's one from John Hagstrom that has really helped my playing:

Get up the necessary mental/physical energy before you start playing; don't let your sound give you energy, let the sound come out of the energy you've built up.

You can't play it until you can buzz it.

Paraphrased...

"As soon as you finish breathing in don't hesitate or delay and immediately blow the horn. This will help to reduce tension from unnecessarily holding your breath"

Tim Wendt

This has been a tremendous help to me.

"Find the sweet spot on your chops and lock your mouthpiece into that exact spot every time you play."

Wayne Bergeron

This was one of MANY valuable pieces of advice he gave me when I studied with him.

"To help improve your tone quality; when playing long tones, imaging a the smooth glass-like surface of a lake with no wind or ripples."

Chris Botti

This helped me eliminate my sometimes uncontrolled vibrato.

"When playing a solo, play as you feel the piece needs to be played not as it is written."

Arturo Sandoval

He told me this as we were working on solo playing during my lesson with him. He demonstrated this by playing a solo on a chart as written (bland and boring) and then he added slurring and dynamics making the solo come alive!

"Have you ever wondered why there are so many people who privately study with great players for many years who can play in the extreme upper register however, they can't get anywhere near the range of their instructor. The reason is that people's teeth, chops etc. are different therefore making it easier for some and harder for others to play in the upper register."

Dan Oxley

Knowing that Wayne had a double C in Jr. High School therefore, it wasn't because he had practiced for many years to gain that range and...hearing what Dan Oxley told me...it was obvious that my on-going struggle for many years was non-value-added thus finally excusing me from having to play double Cs (when I can't after 30+ years of playing) and just enjoy the music I am capable of making....I have never been happier!

One of the first gigs I ever did, I showed up without a stand or pencil. There was no mention that we should bring a stand so I didn't think to... Everyone else had one anyways

The other trumpet player was an old timer and he said something along the lines of, "a musician always brings a stand and a pencil". Now I keep several pencils in my case and a wire stand in the car in case I forget!

Always sing in your head what you are expressing on your horn.

That's the type of thinking I got out of my best teacher in College, Bobby Burns, who's been lone trumpet with EWF for some time now. He got a bit more specific and helped me learn how to hear where the sound starts. It took some experimentation to find the sweet spot and perhaps each horn / mouthpiece combo is a tad different, but it's gotta all be between the ears before ya even inhale ...

Bobby Shew during a group class concerning improvisation fears: "You're always only half-step away from the right note".
