Does anyone ever get scared that maybe you should not pick up the horn again and just enjoy the good ole days?

It seems to me that there are chapters in the lives of people, DW. I remember being timid and tentative when I began my comeback thirteen month ago, but not scared. The time seemed right for me to pick up the horn again. I was in the right chapter. Time with my instruments is now one of the high points of my days. I know more than when I was young and appreciate the music and playing experience more fully. Are you considering a comeback? If so, best wishes to you in sorting things out and finding your way.
Jim

One of those vignettes that will stay in your mind forever:

After a week or so of muddling around in the basement, some friends heard about my efforts and invited me to play with their church orchestra. The very first rehearsal, the very first piece, there was a syncopated intro with the trumpet (and allegedly a couple other instruments.) On the "and of 2" I entered the fray and was the only sound in the sanctuary. The director dropped his baton and an incredible feeling of dread crept over me.

Exactly as you implied in your question --- "What am I doing here??"

He smiled and said, "Nice trumpet solo. Perhaps the rest of the brass and woodwinds would like to join Jeff as my score calls for."

Phew! And thus began a wonderful period of several years playing with this group.
