Junior recital time. I've got a pretty good amount of literature to choose from, but I would like some recommendations and possibly recordings of some pieces you all know and are fond of.

Here are some of my options so far (in no order): Neruda, Kennan, Halsey Stevens, Bozza Caprice or Rustiques, Peaslee Nightsongs, Vivaldi Concerto for two, Kevin McKee Centennial Horizon, Friedman Solus, and Riisager Concertino. There are others, but these are kind of the top picks for the moment. For the most part, these are also pretty heavy pieces...

I guess what I am mainly looking for are more unaccompanied pieces, some pieces with tape or percussion, and just plain interesting pieces. Another duet piece would be good (besides Vivaldi), something with string quartet, or duet with strings, a piccolo piece, and a lyrical song I could play on flugel (possibly a cello or voice transcription). Thanks for any help. I know it will be great to have this information all on one thread. All recommendations are welcome, and I will be listening to each piece as they are recommended.

Here is what I did on my junior recital. These two pieces are fun yet challenging at the same time. The piano parts are monsters for these two. The Hindemith is great, the piano holds a triple feel while the solo has a duple feel.

Alexander Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto in A-flat major (1950)
Paul Hindemith Trumpet Sonata (1939) - Wynton Marsalis has a really good version.

Here are some pieces I would recommend.
Piccolo Trumpet in A: Johann Friedrich Fasch Concerto in D (Hickman Music Edition)
Unaccompanied - Anthony PLOG - Postcards for Trumpet (Listen to the Katie Miller version on youtube)

Shouldn't you be working out the details of a recital program with your private teacher? That person would know your capabilities far better than anyone around here.

Keep them coming! I am not very familiar with Plog's postcards, but that did remind me of Plog's Animal Ditties, which is another possibility.

Larry, I'm just swimming in the pool of ideas, just gathering knowledge of possible pieces to play. Perhaps some of these I'll play at a time other than my junior recital. These post are simply expanding my personal repertoire and that of those who read the thread. My recital program will be chosen by me and my teacher when the semester begins.

i love Centennial Horizon, great piece. you could check out Erik Morales's Concerto, or Fantasie by Jim Stephenson, both are great new works that will be well received.

Hello -

I have a lot of variety involving trumpet in which you might be interested. (thank you RyanG for the mention!).
Included are two trios w/ violin/trumpet/piano.
Trio Sonata and La Viaggio Vita
Another with flute/trumpet/piano. Croatian Trio

Vignettes for trumpet/percussion (very popular)

Thinking for mixed sextet.

A ton of solo trumpet, or trumpet/piano works. Sonatas, concertos, show-pieces...

You can go here and click either Recital, Chamber, or Brass to see my music (and listen to a lot of them):

Hope this helps!

Have you given any thought to a piece for brass quintet? Maybe Ewald 1.

Unaccompanied pieces like Ketting Intrada or Tull Eight profiles work well for recital.

A nice cello piece is Six Studies in English Folk Song by Vaughan Williams. I set this for trumpet and piano for a recital I did last year. It consists of 6 short lyrical movements. I used flugelhorn on three of the inner movements.

I've done pieces from the Wilder Duo Series for Trumpet and Percussion in the past. Wilder himself wrote a nice piece, as did Erwin Chandler. You'll need a strong mallet percussionist to work with you, but the pieces are very cool and very playable.

Hi there!

If you're looking for a piece that is just plain interesting (IMHO), check out Tango Morendo by Kenji Bunch (http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/search?q=tango+morendo). It is a great piece full of sassy tango melodies with bits of contemporary funkiness mixed in. It's dark and tongue-in-cheek at the same time (listen for the "I dream of Jeannie quote). Range for Bb trumpet goes from low G to high Db.

If you want to check out a bit of the piece, there's an excerpt on my website from a past recital. I played it a bit safe, but you'll get the idea.

Cheers!

The Ewazen Concerto for Trumpet and String Quartet is a cool piece that is pretty approachable. For picc and strings Bach Cantata 51 is always fun. Good Luck!

How much music is that in terms of time?
