I wasn't sure which category to put this under, so I just chose this one. First off, I don't have any dire chops emergency related to the subject of this post. I just want to know what leaking air through the corners of the mouth will effect in one's playing. I have always heard to firm the corners to prevent this air leakage, hence the curiosity.

Thanks for all posts.

Air not going through your aperture to set up the vibration of your lips is wasted, as is the effort to move it. That said, it you sound good and don't have endurance or range problems, don't obsess about it.

I have this air leakage occurring too, mainly in the lower register. I don't notice it holding me back in any way, I just feel like since it happens in one register and not in others, I am playing ineffeciently and perhaps moving my embouchure too much (on interval studies for example). It bothers me for that reason and because it is wasted air. But I say don't worry about it if it doesnt bother you or you don't notice any negative effects in your playing.

The "corners" are where the lips meet the sides of the mouthpiece. So yes, firm there. Get a little grip on the mouthpiece, and see if that solves your problem.
