Heard a dew good things about Essential Elements so thought I'd give it a try. Been using it about a month.
Pleasantly surprised.

For someone such as myself (ie still in the early stages) I think its good. I can see the benefits of using it with a school/private/band teacher, but using it on my own seems to work pretty well too. Steady learning curve, sufficient information and some nice little play along tunes.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my experience with it. Feel free to share tour thoughts/experiences.

P.s. I thought the listening library quite good too. I have very limited experience with this type of music but today I listened to them, and I really "listened" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cheers, Mark

I just got the same book too, and also find it very helpful. I was getting tired of the exercises I was giving myself, and since I currently don't have a tutor the book is a big help to progressing at my own speed.

There's tons of exercises and I don't see how I could use them all as I progress, but they're all there for novelty warm-ups.

Good stuff.

I don't do all of the exercises, at least not in order. Each time get it out I'll play one then skip one or two. That way the next time I'll do some of the others I skipped so it keeps it all fresh.

The warm ups are ok too, though I need to find some more material for warm up as I never feel fully warmed up.

It is one method among others.
The greatest advantage of EE is the system of learning a brass instrument (and woodwind, that is) en groupe.

I agree. It means you can go back and learn something new at the level you're currently at instead of having to progress a level to learn something new. I realised I'm finding the exercises more difficult than I thought, which all in all is a good thing since it means I'm learning something I thought I could do before, but actually can't.

I'm also learning to read music properly now, since there's way too many exercises to write the name of the notes underneath.

It just goes to show how wrong you can be at judging your own ability.
I'm very new, still learning basics, but I looked at another book I have and though " that's aimed at kids, it'll be super easy", how very wrong I was. It's a little discouraging struggling with what I thought would be simple, but I'm getting there and suppose that we all have to start somewhere.

With regards to reading the music, I avoid writing anything at all.
I used to write the notes or valves or both, but found all I was learning was to read what I had wrote.
I'm now learning to read much quicker since I stopped that and find that it's not as bad as expected. I still struggle to read it quick enough at times but I'm getting there.
