I just picked up a used 8335RGM. These horns seemed to be pretty hot when they came out but are no longer made or talked about much anymore. This is the first Xeno I've ever played and for me it plays very secure, intonation is good, valves are great and actually gives me a better upper range. Hit my first E over high C today.
Anyone else playing this horn? _________________ CarolBrass CTR-5000L-YLT-SLB

Just like this one? Very nice design - too bad these were limited edition only.

It's just an RGS with the shot lacquer finish instead of the silver. That being said, I think it looks way better. IMO, the RGS is a great horn! Yamaha does all of it's special editions off of it.

Bob; I had one in the shotblast silver. It was definitely one of the best looking horns I ever had and also one of the best made. Valves and slides - simply phenomenal. After I had it a while I felt like it took a bit more effort than some horns to gain the projection I needed. That might have been the silver plate in shotblast, though. In retrospect - it's one of the horns I'm really sorry I let get away.
If I could have any two trumpets back that I've had I'd probably take the Yamaha 8335 RGS and a Strad 43*. The Yamaha I'd probably use for solo and the 43* I'd use if I needed a little more cut or projection. _________________ Jonathan Milam

| I absolutely love my 8335rgm. I have tried just about every make and model of trumpet available in the US but this horn really knocks me out. The ease of response, evenness of tone and intonation in all registers makes it an easy horn to love. I personally love the ceramic love of the shotblast finish. I ve had people come up to me after shows and say that the horn looks like it has a pearl finish. I personally think it is a breeze to change timbers and tones with the 8335rgm. I have not came across another production company that produces such consistant trumpets as Yamaha. Sure it is not a custom made horn by any means but you also don't have to take out a second mortgage to buy a Yamaha either. Sound wise it leans more towards a dark tone rather than bright but I have been able to brighten it up with the right mouthpiece cup. It is true what a lot of people say though, you can get great results from this horn with a Yamaha mouthpiece. I have went through my whole "suitcase" of mouthpieces and none of them really click the way the Yamaha mouthpiece does with the rgm. It is a shame this model was only a limited edition. |
