| any comments about Van Laar flugelhorns? How do they compare to Adams? I play in the flugelhorn section of a large windband, have to play a lot in the high register, fast technical stuff, no solo work. what would you recommend? |

I have no experience playing one in an ensemble. I have tried them, and I know that they are very fine instruments. _________________ Freelance Performer/Teacher WV, PA, MD, and OH http://www.neil-king.com

Both brands make excellent flugelhorns, but they both play a bit diffent.
Personally my preference goes to the Van Laar.
But I suggest you try them both out yourself, like I would suggest to anyone buying a new horn. _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-6335H

I personally play on a Yamaha, but have tried The Adams Flugelhorn out at Trent Austin's Brass Shop, and If I had the cash I would go with the Adams Flugelhorn. An incredibly Sweet and Warm Dark Buttery Jazz Sound! is the best way I can describe it . . . .
Trent also has a sweet sounding doubler's Flugelhorn at a very reasonable price! give him a call at Austin Custom Brass
Good Luck!

I'm from Holland, and I would choose v. Laar flugelhorns over Adams anytime. I see way more Van Laar flugels than Adams around in my part of the country.
For the record, I do not own any horns of Adams or Van Laar (have two Courtois flugels), but if I ever need a high-end flugel, it will be a Van Laar B2. |

The OIRAM designed by Mario sounds exceptional on every recording or video I've ever heard (regardless of the player ). |

Then you will get a warm welcome like all of their customer do.
That's surely something that the people at Adams can work on. _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-6335H

IMO, both are great products. For my personal taste, the Adams suits me a little bit better. _________________ Pat Shaner

Be sure to let us know how you get on...
I own his Oiram and I cannot find words to adequately describe how good it is. It blends...the valves are fantastic and contribute to a very precise horn. The sound is simply beautiful...to say nothing about how the horn looks...
If a Hub Van Laar doesn't exceed your needs I would be amazed.

FWIW - I just received customer service from Adams that was above and beyond anything I have received in the past. Adams is a great company in my experience. |

Well everybody has his/her own preferences. Like I said before, both brands deliver excellent products.
BTW ... I've also seen 2nd hand HvL horns in the Adams store in the past

Glad to hear that. Maybe to clarify my earlier statement, my "less positive" experiences are absolutely NOT refering to the quality of their products or work which are always good. In my humble opinion, their own store in Ittervoort (Holland) just doesn't score that well in returning mails (never returned one of some I wrote), giving correct information on the telephone or helping you out if you're looking for something that not directly available from their shop. But hey, that's their loss. In all those cases I ended up buying things somewhere else. _________________ Trumpet : Yamaha YTR-6335H

I was fortunate to borrow a Hub Van Laar Oriam Ack flugel and play it for a year. It is truly a work of art and a beautiful horn. I enjoyed the timbre and found the sound dark, but full of color. I associated this with the lack of bracing and very free and open feeling it has. I was very impressed. It is not the darkest horn, as I find my Kanstul made French Besson is darker. _________________ www.blairyarranton.com |

I have been at the Van Laar workshop today and tested a few of their flugelhorns: B1, R1, B2, R2, R3 and Oiram Ack. They are all very fine instruments, very precise, very easy to play. Finally I ordered an Oiram Ack in raw brass. I have been playing a Besson Meha for almost 20 years and used to think that this is a pretty decent flugelhorn. I also tried a Kanstul 1525 recently and thought it was quite good. Now the Kanstul seems rather disappointing and the Besson Meha is just a bad joke. All the Van Laars are very precise, great valves, very easy to play, in all registers, very good control of the sound. Playing the Oiram Ack is pure bliss. I can't wait to get mine (in 4 months). |
