Having read 'Back to Basics', I'd love to practice some of the exercises the book refers to.
Can anyone direct me to titles and where to buy these.
I am in Scotland.
Kind Regards,

| I am a former Cichowicz student and I also have the book. I find the book to be a very useful tool. |

I've now got the book and I'm using it, though had to import it and can't believe they imposed a customs charge doubling its price.
As a query for former students, how are you meant to use the exercises?
Do you do one set, group (a) one day, and the next the next, or how did you do it?
Best Wishes. _________________ Gordon |

When I did these with Cichowicz at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada we started just with V.C 1, starting on G and doing all the extensions. As we became more comfortable with them, he made us transpose into different keys and also add V.C 2. I remember him telling us that playing them in different keys would improve not only our transposition but also our musicianship. So I'm not sure why the new "long tone studies" book has them all written out, not really necessary IMHO. However, I bought the book and really enjoyed reading what his former students had to say about practicing them and also that article he wrote for the Instrumentalist in '96 is indispensable reading, also IMHO. Cheers,

A great book. I was lucky and got to take a few lessons with Arnold Jacobs ( wish I could say that about Cichowciz ) and Luis' book has been a wonderful resourse, as has "Back to Basics". Bruce Nelsons book " Also Sprake Arnold Jacobs" (sp?) is also a must read.

Thank you Don for the link to the book. As for my spelling "Sprake"????? I know better than that. I blame beer before I get on line . The book is a very good read. I had the honour to sub in the Grant Park Orch. when Bruce Nelson was playing. A very nice man and a great player. _________________ If it's loud enough, they'll surrender |
