Have a vintage horn with a rag case.

Any suggestions for a hard shell case. Nothing exotic, just good protection.

Thanks

Torpedos are the best single cases period. Those things are indestructible.

I'll also recommend the Torpedo. They're awesome. It's such a great feeling when you put the horn away to know that it's rock solid safe.

The Protec ProPac Slimline PB301 is also a great single case.
Very protective - although less than the Torpedo -, slotstyle - much easier and safer IMHO to load / unload than the Torpedo -, rather cheap, very well made.

Otherwise, Gator makes some very nice cases quite cheap and apparently well made - never owned one - in a variety of styles.

The Protec Travel Light Case is one of my favorite cases. It is designed to ensure that the trumpet fits snugly inside (cannot move at all!) and it is a hard shell case.

For the best protection, Walt Johnson or maybe Wiseman with Torpedo in the mix.

I ordered a Jakob Winter case from Germany since it is the traditional style; what with the horrible vision in my right eye, I kept smacking the Protec into things.

No one seems to make a generic case like that in the US any more. The closest you'll get are those traditional Bach cases.

I like my basic Protec single case. Great protection at a very reasonable price.

I've been looking at the ProTec Contoured trumpet case to take over for an old gig bag I've been using to haul my beater teaching horn to school and back. Did you compare that to yours?

(Weird... my reply disappeared)

That contoured case is great and you'll love it. My sister dropped a horn in that case from the back of her SUV onto the pavement, bell first. I thought I had a crunched bell but instead it was just fine.

I own a torpedo and it is a good product. I have two minor criticisms of the torpedo; the first involves the mouthpiece pouch. If you are not careful you can drop the mouthpiece on your bell while removing the mouthpiece from the pouch. A stupid move but I managed to do it. Second, they are very heavy and kind of awkward. But still a great product.

I appreciate all feedback, and I don't want to dismiss anyone's perception, but I've weighed many, many cases, and the Torpedo Bag Classic is absolutely positively below average. It's 6 pounds. Even next to a nylon gig bag (usually 3-4 pounds), this cannot be called "very heavy." The pre-2006 Classics were heavier (about eight pounds), so perhaps that's where this perception comes from? With a trumpet, books, mutes, stuff in the lid pocket, etc...things can add up, but that's not the case weighing things down.

"Not the case..." Get it? Heh. Or not. : )

A Bach brown single case is 8-9 depending on vintage, and the Loredo is just under 8. I weighed the Kanstul case that ships with their flugelhorns and it was 17 pounds--empty! Wooden cases are often around 10 pounds and up.

It's time for a "Case Comparator," I think! : )

Okay very heavy was not accurate but they are a bit awkward..or maybe it is me??!! Maybe I need to take all my stuff out of the mute bag?? Steve, you are making a great product. These observations are just that..not to be considered factual or negative. I am sorry if it came across that way. I will say the customer service from Steve is phenomenal. The zipper on the mute bag quit working and I received a replacement in a few days!!

The Gladstone cases are quite nice in the traditional style. Kanstul has them on the website.

Well, not quite. They carry the horn turned on its side instead of up-and-down, if you know what I mean.
