My newest acquisition is this vintage cornet. Unfortunately, the previous owner did not know anything about it. There are no engravings anywhere, except for the serial number on the 2nd valve. Can anyone help me identify this horn?

I don't recognize the wrap. You might email Paul Ayick. http://www.paulayickvintagebrass.com/

The wrap is the old "S" wrap that was popular from about 1910 to 1920 or so. Most manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe made cornets like this during that time, so it will be hard to identify with no markings.

Yup, I've got an old Martin that very similar in wrap.

If you look through the old makers catalogs - Buescher, Martin, Conn, etc - they'll all have cornets shaped like that.

Yep, it is a "Stencil" . . . with a 1910-1920 era wrap.

That was the "Golden Age of Brass Band" music . . . and a lot of music stores wanted horns to sell that they had an exclusive on.

Some "stencils" were made in the US, and many others abroad. Some were ok, of course, because they were made by good companies . . . but others were made "on the cheap," for profit purposes of course, and made by various music companies around the globe.

I imagine knowledge of who made that stencil died with the person who ordered the horn.

It does not look like a Conn from that period. The finger buttons, braces and mouthpiece reciever are different.

It has one extra bend in the S-wrap than the Martins or the Conns.

Sadly, no stamps anywhere. I'm a collector though, and all the slides move and it plays very well despite its age, so I'm happy with it. Thanks everyone for the help!

Here's a Boston with the extra bend, but the mystery horn doesn't really look like the Boston otherwise.

Could be any one of several American or European makers. I could be a stencil horn that was made for a music store and they never engraved their name on it. That's my guess. Does the thing actually play? I am guessing not.

Yes it does play. Surprisingly well. It has no problems reaching low F# or the notes high above the staff. Its previous owner(s) took excellent care of it.
