|
|
| I am currently looking for a good flugelhorn feature to play in my jazz band this year. It is my senior year in high school and my director has left the choice of the piece up to me. I want a piece that is still challenging but great to play. any suggestions? Please help. |

| I have about 10 pieces I can recommend. It's too late in the evening to give you the information tonight, but tomorrow, I'll send you details and some sound bites. They're mostly professional-level arrangements that have been recorded by prominent musicians and bands, but because they're mostly ballads, they shouldn't be too difficult to handle. |

Go to jwpepper.com and look under jazz ensemble music. There is a section of features for each instrument. I would suggest something like "Round Midnight", "My Funny Valentine" or "I Remember Clifford". I am a jazz band director and I have used these tunes in the past for features.
If you find tunes/arrangements you like, then share that with your director. I have had students come up with suggestions, but it is up to me to decide. If the arrangement is a good fit for the ensemble and I think it will work, I am very open to trying the chart. Best of luck!!! _________________ Jupiter 1600i Trumpet

| Yeah, "Clifford" is a beautiful piece--Benny Golson's eulogy on the great trumpeter, Clifford Brown. I have three or four charts. Usually you think of "Clifford" as a trumpet piece, but it certainly works well using flugelhorn too. |

| For another choice to the good ones so far, I love Pat Metheny's "Always and Forever" arr Bob Curnow. IIRC Bobby Shew plays flugel on the album. Another great version is on Roy Hargrove's "Moment to Moment". Between the 2, I prefer Roy's solo. |
