I know he's trying to emulate Cat but I have to say I find this some of the most un-musical, crass and nasty sounding trumpet playing I've heard in a long time (his colleague obviously agrees @ 2:09) . Unfortunately this is my opinion about all of the output he's chosen to share with the public.

I completely understand he's young (off to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London), that he's impressed some high note jocks and that a lead trumpet player needs some cajones, but I think he could benefit from returning to fundamentals, thinking about his sound and developing a great deal of humility.

You mad....it doesn't look good on you, or anyone for that matter.

I saw some cell phone video of him at an Essentially Ellington clinic a couple of weeks ago. He was tearing up some movements of the Far East Suite.

Could we see some video of your lead playing or Cat Anderson type soloing so we could see how it's done?

Interesting discussion, both sides have credence. It is dirty, bawdy soloing, but it's also very exciting. Not to my taste, but credit to the guy.

I bet the 4th trumpet is still ashamed of getting caught out like that!

It's weird to me that you guys see that. Looks like disbelief to me.

I mean, the kid he's watching just picked off 4 D's above Double C! I know that everyone on the TH has got a triple forte double C in their back pocket, but come on! Wouldn't you be impressed? Not even just a little bit???

I honestly don't think it is just disbelief, he also does it twice.

It may well be a very good demonstration that music which is superb to one person, may be vulgar to another!

At the end of the day, not many of us can play like that if we wanted to or not. I certainly can't AND he's 18!!!!.

Pretty incredible

I'm not sure...this is the TH buddy. Everyone's got a triple pedal C to Double C range. Didn't you know that?

Not sure why this thread has been resurrected again from last September?

Anyway I thought it might be a good idea to say that I've played several big band gigs with Louis and he is absolutely the most talented trumpet player I have ever played with. Note I'm saying played with not listened to on Youtube etc - you have to be on the bandstand to appreciate it.

Of course everyone jumps in and comments about his incredible range but it just doesn't do him justice. What is amazing is his accuracy and sound all over the horn.

Yes he can do the 'Waynard' thing but he's definately not a one-trick pony and really can play anything. It's quite humbling to give a 17 year old the lead pad on a gig and hear him absolutely nail it without even rehearsing.

Watch out for him in the future he really is going to be a star and for those detractors try and go hear him play (if you're in the UK) as you will be amazed.

Louis has natural talent in the upper register, he has super relaxed facial muscles in all registers and perfect jaw positioning to play high notes all day long. Maynard and a few others had that kind of natural talent. He probably has no idea how he's doing it... so unfair but you can only be happy for him. Go louis !!!!

A bump to say that Louis has been playing with the Big Phat Band this summer. I'd say he's turned out OK.

I think that colleague's sour look (if it was directed at what Louis was playing), is more in line with this girl's attitude:

Man, why do you have to post something like that. Any trumpet player worth his salt who has any kind of awareness of who the current great players and up-and-comers are knows who Louis Dowdeswell is and knows that this kid is solid as hell on the horn. He will without a doubt have a successful and fulfilling career as a trumpet player. If you've seen the full body of work that he's posted you will know that the kid can play musically, can play in tune, can play with a good sound and has monster high chops.

I have not listened to the clip referenced on this thread. I don't need to. If he sounds bad or unmusical on it, so what. It's an anomaly for him. Maybe this one's a stinker. There isn't a trumpet player in existence who would be proud of every single performance they've ever done in their life. Everyone stinks it up at one time or another, we're only human.

These are the kinds of criticisms that only reflect poorly on the critic.

Hi ShipsAhoy. I understand what you're saying, but if you go back to the original recordings of Cat playing that material, Louis nailed it. In fact, I don't know that I've heard more than one or two other people ever play Cat's parts more authentically.. If you were playing a Harry James song and doing tribute to him, you would use a lot of vibrato regardless of our time period or what your personal preference is. Cat played with his teeth closed and those partials locked in where ever the horn put them period. He didn't lip them around in tune. I'm glad that the thread got resurrected so that I could hear that solo.
