I am going to be a sophomore at the Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. Participating in the ABQ seminar taught me so much about working in a chamber group. I have never played in a quintet like this before, and learned about where to play out and where to let your partners play out with their melody. The coaches pushed us to out limit and taught us how to become better muscians through listening beyond ourselves and focusing on the entire group. I would go back in a heartbeat! |

i attended the ABQ seminar, I got my ass handed to me every day, but at no other place would I have the biggest smile on my face at the same time.
The two weeks of strictly brass quintet playing was, for me, an concentrated infusion of all the skills I'd learn elsewhere like playing in an orchestra... blending, intonation, listening... but in a brass quintet it comes to you much faster, I was playing the hardest stuff- being challenged. Now I sit in the back of orchestra and I feel like I'm cheating, because unless I'm sitting next to a another ABQ member, I'm hearing things no one else is, ... "oh! I'm supposed to be playing a duet with the cellos here... that's what the composer wanted..." .
Truly an amazing experience.
thanks Andrew and all the folks who made it happen! |

As one of the few people in highschool who were privileged to attend the ABQ seminar, I definitely could feel my improvement over the two weeks I was in Cambridge. Playing with so many great players and teachers all on the college level definitely put me on that next level and I am so glad that I decided to go. I now look at music in a completely different way. No longer am I focused on my individual part so much that the whole piece speaks the way the composer wanted. Blending and playing with other people became so important. The coaches were great and I learned a lot from every single person there. I would definitely attend the seminar again. Plus Boston and Cambridge are both fantastic and the campus at MIT is just beautiful. Definitely the highlight of my summer! |

The Atlantic Brass Quintet seminar, was needless to say, one of the best experiences of my life, both musically and in all other respects. The coachings that we received were both intense and constructive, and the staff and students were incredibly supportive and helpful. I learned more technically in two weeks than I had learned in the past six months. The staff doesn't accept anything less than your best, and everyone, and I mean EVERYONE takes it seriously. The literature we played was no joke, and I got to bond with four other incredible young musicians that were in my quintet. Both the personal and career connections I made there will last a lifetime. Meeting with and working with so many incredible people was truly a gift and I can not wait to go back. I wasn't sure that music performance was "it" for me when I got to Boston, but since the seminar, I know in my heart that I never want to do anything else.
Thanks to the staff and everyone else who made my experience all that it was.

The two weeks I spent at the Atlantic Brass Quintet seminar were honestly the best two weeks I have ever had in my musical life. I've had some experience with brass quintets in the past, but I've never been involved with other students who take it very seriously and want to succeed and put on a spectacular concert at the end of the week. The instructors are all knowledgeable and experienced, and only want to see everyone do their best. The literature is difficult, but the instructors pick pieces for your group that they know you can pull off.
Basically, this seminar is one of the best things a brass player can do for themselves as a musician, and as a person. Thanks to Andrew and everyone else for making it such a memorable experience, and I'm already looking forward to next year! |

| My only regret about the ABQ seminar was that I waited so long before I decided to attend. This seminar helped me focus my attentions and goals so intensely, I can only imagine what kind of wonders it could have done for my younger self. I would strongly recommend this program to anyone intending a career in music; chamber, orchestra or otherwise. The skills gained in group rehearsal technique are infinitely translatable to my collegiate ensembles, and the feeling of pride in a well performed piece is something that will likely stay with me forever. The atmosphere of the seminar is such that rapid musical development is not a goal, it is an inevitability. The best 2 weeks of the summer for me, I am certainly going back next year. |

I enjoyed the ABQ Brass Quintet Seminar a lot. I got to meet amazing musicians and got to play with them side by side. ABQ kicked my ass and it was one of the best brass seminars I have ever been too. They taught me so much from working with others in my quintet too breaking down my music and gave me real life situations that I had to solve. You leave with so much more music under your belt and your chops will feel amazing. I hope to attend next summer to get my ass kicked again and learn even more challenging music!
I HIGHLY recommend this Seminar to trumpets players of all ages! |
