Old Kings, Holtons and Olds Ambassadors are great if put in playing condition. Also, look for Besson 609/709 which are made by Kanstul are are superior to any student model. Getzen 300 is probably the best currently made student horn in that price range.
The Kanstul 700 is marketed as a student or entry level horn, but plays and sounds like a pro model. I think they're in the $800-$950 range new. You don't see them used very often.
Yamaha would be fine as a student horn, except they're made in Japan. _________________ Crazy Nate aka Jive-a-licious

Yamaha makes all student horns in China now and have done so for a few years.
Why would the Yamaha not be fine either way? _________________ http://austincustombrass.com

I stand corrected. Thanks for that info.
Yamaha sells quality instruments. If you really want a horn from China, go right ahead. But, why pay for a horn to be shipped all the way from China, when there is equal or better quality right here with Kanstul and Getzen? _________________ Crazy Nate aka Jive-a-licious

I owned a Getzen 700S Eterna II which was a fine horn, and still listed at the Getzen website. But, I thought these were a limited run, available in only some music stores, so thought these would be very difficult to find? And, yes, their valves are beyond amazing. _________________ '64 Connstellation 38B*

It's the 700SP that was the limited run. Very good horn! I sold one for $450, which I think should be top dollar for that model. The Dad I sold it to bought it for his beginner son, but it played better than his pro horn, so he used it for his paying gigs. I would steer clear of their 770 |

Get the Yamaha
They are excellent student trumpets and are made FOR STUDENTS - meaning they are built to withstand the treatment they are likely to receive. I have seen a Yamaha 2335 be dropped down the stairs of a school (not carpeted) then be picked up and played - no damage whatsoever.
Until students get to a high standard my advice is always "buy Yamaha" - consistent quality, consistent sound, excellent instruments
(and should anything go drastically wrong, it is very easy to get spare parts, unlike many other makes) |

PLEASE read this link!!

(I'm recommending the $275 LA Olds Ambassador out of their selection, but there's a lot to choose from that would serve you well, some for less some for more) |

| I played on a Yamaha student model for 4 years when I first started playing trumpet. I have played many other student models since, and I have still not found one that played with the quality of the Yamaha. |

Getzen! Best entry level horn out there. And you get the famous Getzen valves which are guaranteed for life. I wouldn't consider anything else! _________________ Veteran comebacker!
