"Groundation" and the two other bands I saw in Boston last month all had a sax & trumpet or a trumpet and trombone duo. No quibble from me, they all mixed reggae with ska. First thing come to mind with the OQ was: 'buffalo soldier'.

True, more horns in ska:
The Toasters
Reel Big Fish
Voodoo Glow Skulls
The Specials
Madness
English Beat
More reggae: UB40
Fishbone: A highly under rated band, all over the map stylistically. Walter Kibbee plays pocket trumpet.
A friend of mine just posted a video of Burning Spear Live in Paris. All female horn section: trombone, trumpet, tenor sax.
The "Freeman" CD is excellent.
I like playing reggae, and it is fun to solo over. Like blues, it is much more about the feel than showing off your chops. _________________ "Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny"

Yes, I have that Live in Paris recording. The trumpet player is Pam Fleming--a Brooklyn-based trumpet player. I attended a lot of her gigs over the years and have learned from hearing her play. Great playing and recording. The band is so tight.

Edson Gomes is a Brazilian reggae artist with some great horns. Love all of his stuff. |

I played trumpet and trombone, mainly as a sub, in this band for a fair number of years. The studio recordings are over-produced (IMO), and there are a fair number of instances where I punched in a line on either horn on a track that had other parts played by players I never met.
But it's more reggae, as opposed to this ska band I played a few tracks on trombone for:

Still lotsa horns though. _________________ J. Notso Nieuwguyski |
