So true. Then again, when I'm practicing, my neighbors aren't sleeping!

How about humility? Here's a recognized great giving away big $, playing small venues for the connection to his audience, and saying that he hasn't yet mastered the trumpet.

Yes, absolutely - he is a humble guy. Maybe not the best trumpet player (I AM NOT PUTTING HIM DOWN) but a first rate human being.

I liked his music as a kid--it was one of the things that motivated me to play trumpet in the '60s. As I got more into trumpetology, I viewed him with derision. Recently I started listening to his old TJB stuff, and have realized how unique and musical he really is.

Herb Alpert was a hero of mine when I first began the horn. I saw the TJB twice and each time enjoyed his playing and his showmanship. (His shows were funny with lots of slapstick humor and charm.)

Another side of the man was his work as a record producer and executive. He picked some great talent and backed some terrific artists (The Carpenters, Captain and Tennile, Rita Coolidge, Sergio Mendes, Cat Stevens, Wes Montgomery, Paul Desmond, Jobim, Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, etc.).

I just watched the PBS American Masters show on Sam Cooke and Alpert talks about working with Cooke. Herb A. is quite modest and sings the praises of Cooke.

Since then I've learned about his work as a visual artist, his philanthropy with colleges and the school in Harlem. He still tours and continues to play.

What a terrific human. I admire him now more than ever.

I remember reading an interview many years ago, post-TJB and pre-Rise, where he said he had gotten "ridiculously rich" and suffered such an existential crisis that he said "my horn became my enemy." I think he has since found his identity and is back to doing what he loves--playing his horn.

I've seen some of the recent videos on youtube and he's clearly enjoying it. Being worth an estimated 750 million bucks means a lot less to him than just making music--although it gives him the freedom to take those small gigs and play what he wants to. Glad to see him enjoying his non-retirement, as well as his philanthropic efforts. And he's really not a bad player--he's no Wynton Marsalis, but he plays musically and with sincerity. He's got nothing left to prove, and he can play what he wants when he wants and I think he's probably a lot happier than he was at the peak of his fame.

He also contracted Miles Davis to A & M.

His best album: Fandango

Herb Alpert could make that trumpet sing. He has tremendous soul. His phrasing and tone are impeccable. He proves that it's not all about playing in the stratosphere. An incredible talent. I'm going to try to catch his show in New York.
Thanks for sharing the article.

Fandango! was remastered and re-released last week (or so) for the first time since 1982. It is by far my favorite Herb Alpert album and is actually my favorite album of all time. I was so excited! I bought it on iTunes.

You mean you bought a license to play it on iTunes.

But, on another point, how does the remaster compare? I am not a fan of what they did to Whipped Cream and Other Delights.

The mix is a little light on bass, compared to what I remember and have heard on YouTube. Other than that, it's the same.
