Anyone else find that a mouthpiece smaller than the one you use for trumpet works better on cornet? _________________ Jim Hatfield

I usually play a 3C-sized piece for trumpet (little bigger than Bach 3C) and have found that a Bach 6 works nicely on a Bach cornet.
A smaller diameter can help balance out a deeper cup, maybe??

I've been playing and liking a Curry 5BBC, which has a 16.7 mm inside cup diameter. That size in a trumpet piece, in other words a 5C, seems and sounds a little tight to me. You might be right about the depth factor. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I play a Monette Prana B3 for trumpet but play a Standard B5 for cornet. The B5 has a warmer, darker tone. Thanks to the deep "V" shaped cup. And the B5 has a smaller rim diameter too. _________________ Matthew Porter

I play a Mount Vernon clone 3C from Trent Austin on trumpet and an old Mount Vernon 7B on cornet. Can't feel a lot of difference in them.

For me, a wider cup for a cornet, narrower cup for trumpet and narrower yet for a flugelhorn. Depth-wise they are all over the map. |

I play a much deeper mouthpiece on cornet than on trumpet, but they have the same diameter and rim. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |
