Mr. Adam passed away this morning at his home. He was 96. Details to follow. In many ways, his long life was even more distinguished than his career. _________________ Bach trumpet artist-clinician

Very sad. Mr.Adam influenced and helped to produce some great players, and perhaps more importantly, some great teachers.
Condolences to Mr. Adams's family and to those he has mentored. _________________ Tom

Oh my! I am deeply saddened to hear of this. I was fortunate to be able to take some lessons with Mr. Adam. It was a honor to know him.
He was the teacher's teacher.

What a life he had! Think about how many of us he helped, both directly and indirectly. We are lucky to have had him. _________________ Jonathan Vieker

Pat,
Thanks for sharing this news. I know it must be hard to lose a teacher and mentor. Being able to share his ideas will certainly keep his memory alive! I know that I have greatly benefitted from the teachings of Bill Adam through the great forum that you have moderated here on TH.
My condolences to his family and friends, and especially to you in this difficult time.
Take care,
Derek |

Even though I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Adam I have worked with many of his former students. He leaves behind a great legacy and will not be forgotten. God bless him, his family and the scores of trumpets players he's influenced these past decades. _________________ Some trumpets

I'm one of those indirect beneficiaries of his fine teaching. I would have loved to have met and studied with him. God Bless.

Yes, Mr. Adam's passing is sad. It was a privilege and honor to know him and study with him. It is amazing how often I think of him and quote him. My wife reminded me last night that at IU, he told me I should marry that girl (her)!
I saw the news here yesterday, within a couple of hours of the posting. What made me log on to this site at that time, from work, when I come to this site very infrequently, months or years apart?

Though I didn't get to study personally with Mr. Adam, my playing and career were both helped by the time I spent studying with several of his students over the years (first Jerry Lewis at Joliet Jr. College while still in High School, then later with Robert Platt of the Berlin Philharmonic when I lived in Germany). I also spent a wonderful afternoon at my house near Berlin with Bobby Burns, sharing my CG routine with him whilst he shared his Bill Adams routine with me. I am thankful for these experiences gained indirectly through his sharing his knowledge with so many others.
I am happy he lived a great and long life and I sure hope his passing was peaceful. My condolences to all who knew and loved the man.
Sincerely,
John Mohan |

I'm so fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to drive to Indiana and take a lesson with Mr. Adam. I will never forget his warmth and his ability to instill confidence in me after just one lesson. This kind, elder man looked me square in the eye when I arrived at his home and he said, "Shake my hand and squeeze it hard." As I tried to squeeze, I found he was overpowering me. "Is that all you got?", he said. I thought to myself, I'm in the presence of the Yoda of trumpet. What a truly incredible teacher and human being. He will greatly be missed. |
