Recently, the Minnesota Orchestra was asked to participate in a "side-by-side" rehearasal with the orchestra from the University of Minnesota. The repertoire for that service was the 4th movement from Schumann's 3rd symphony (Rhenische) and the 1st movement from Sibelius' 5th symphony.

For those that know the Sibelius, there is a passage in the first movement that requires the 1st trumpet to play a short motif followed by the 2nd trumpet in a lower register and finally back to the 1st player to finish off starting mf on a low 'F". It's a well-known excerpt and deserving of practice for the occasional audition where it might show up.

However, when the passage came up, our music director, Osmo Vanska( would someone advise me how to place umlauts over vowels that need them?)
stopped and told the trumpets that the tradition in Finland, where he and Sibelius are from, is to the have the three trumpets play the three excerpts 1st trumpet, 2nd trumpet, and 3rd trumpet, respectively! I had never heard that before and looked at my associate/ 3rd trumpeter, Doug Carlsen and said "Well, that's one less for me to practice and one more for you!" I must admit that it makes sense but don't know why it was apportioned as it was in the first place.

So, all you 3rd players...get "cracking"!

Warmly,

Manny Laureano

Mr. Laureano,

Isn't it nice to pass the "heat" down the line once in a while?

Hello Mr. Laureano,

To create the ä's necessary to Mr. Vänskä's name. You simply hold [Alt] and press [1][3][2] in succession... voilá!

BTW, thanks for sharing the story.

Take care.
