I think that's my goal after college is to study with a famous player whom I really like.
I'm wondering, who gives lessons? Who are some of the best teachers/performers? |

The best players are Not always the best teachers.
With the exception of my very first teacher, all my teachers were reknowned players.
My first teacher made the job of my subsequent teachers much easier.
I was taught theory, sight-singing and transposition by my first teacher.
Do not preclude a teacher who is not known as a player.
Carmine Caruso and Donald Reinhart come to mind as examples of this.

Good point, Wilmer. Good to hear from you! Sometimes the best players can be the best teachers but not always. I am very lucky to study with two of the finest teachers and players around
today--Laurie Frink and John McNeil. They can really teach, too!

I have studied with some very famous players, some have been outstanding, most have been good, one was a waste of money.
The one which stands head and shoulders above the rest was Crispian Steele-Perkins. At the time he was only giving lessons by invitation. He heard me at a masterclass and asked whether I would be interested. As he had been one of my trumpeting heros since I had first started taking an interest in trumpet recordings, I said yes!
I paid for an hour lesson, was there over three hours.
We discussed my playing, his playing, different styles of piccolo trumpet playing, natural trumpet, slide trumpet, if it was possible to be related, we discussed it!
It was fantastic. I left his house on such a high!
In fact, I am still able to recall a lot of what he said about my playing - always useful when I think it's going really badly!
This was about 7 years ago.
I have taken a couple more lessons from him over that time, each time I have left feeling really positive about my playing and generally on a high - I should really try and organise another one, but every time I am free he is out of the country and every time he is around I am busy!
I agree 100% that the best teachers are not always the best players. The lesson which was a complete waste of money was with a London Pro Player who is very well respected as a player and as a teacher. From the moment I walked in it seemed as if I was an inconvenience to him and that he was only doing it for the money. I reckon if it had been a regular thing, such as at a music college or university, it may have been worth it, but as a one-off it was completely pointless. |

With money being so tight I would think a $100 would get you a lesson with just about anyone.
They all have ideas as to how and what should be done and would works for them.
Lots of guys only take one or two lessons for a hour or two.
Bobby Shew instantly comes to mind. Wayne Bergeron, Howie Shear etc.
I hear guys say, "I'm thinking of taking a lesson from Bobby 'cause his students tend to start sounding like him." |

I was very fortunate to have a lesson with Charlie Schlueter (BSO) back in the early 90s. Sitting beside his tremendous resonant sound for the hour or so that we were together will stay with me always. He also presented a concept that has made a world of difference in the way that I approach the instrument these days. I wrote about my lesson at Ole's web site:

Enjoy!

Derek,
I have taken five or six lessons with Charlie over the past year or so. Since I started my whole thinking on how to play has changed. I can't believe what a great teacher Charlie is. When I first started with him the stuff was way past what I could understand, never mind put to use. The way he taught me made it click quickly.
Recently people have been telling me how good I sound. I have people say, " I cant put my finger on it but your sound is so nice."
I can directly relate my sound to what Charlie is teaching me. Another way I know I'm on the right track is the amount of jobs is way up.
If I lived closer I would figure out a way to take lessons every week. The people in Boston are truly lucky! |

I took three or four lessons with Susan Slaughter, principal of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. We had worked on orchestral excerpts and basic principals of playing. I’ll never forget how she had me playing Wagner's "Parsifal" the last lesson that I took from her. She had good insight into my all around playing, too. Nice person!

I'd be interested to know who that was (I understand if you don't want to post his name).
I've had lessons with a couple of London pros, and as well as being great players, they have proved to be equally good teachers, and very friendly! |

I would prefer not to mention his name, especially in a public forum. I have met him a number of times since and have got on very well. I know he is a very respected teacher, we just didn't click! |

I think that you just need to find the players who you admire. Listen to their stuff and then go to their gigs and nag the crap out of them until you get a lesson! I don't really want to boast or start spilling my guts as to my past or present teachers. However, you are on the right track.
good luck

Cheers Trumpetmike. Isn't there a new book coming out in UK or has it already made the best sellers list? |
