It has been just over a year since I recorded Amazing Grace for my nephew's funeral. He was killed in a car crash last July leaving two young children.

Gary played trumpet in high school as well as his dad, his great grandfather and his aunt and uncle. I was surprised how the music helped his family. They asked for Cd copies. It is not about me but I wanted to add the high notes at the end to launch Gary on his way. That is exactly how it was interpreted although one person did say she had never heard it played "that way". Here it is

About a week ago a dear friend of mine, Tony Injayan, who was a gifted trumpet player and teacher passed away, unexpectedly, in his sleep at 56 years old. His Celebration of Life was held this past Saturday. I was not asked to play but I brought my horn anyway and had transcribed Ron Romm's Amazing Grace just in case. There were many musicians and several trumpet players there, none of whom brought their horns. After all had spoken and the minister said, "Is there anybody else?" I stood up with my horn and said through my tears that it wouldn't be a a proper celebration of Tony's life if somebody didn't play. The family was exceedingly grateful. Many hadn't heard him play since he was a child. His brother joked about the fact that his brother used to walk around with his mouthpiece buzzing so I did a little bit of that as well. There were tears and applause all around. It was a fitting send off indeed. I will play with Tony again on THAT day.

That must have been difficult. I did not have the self control to play live plus I had only been back on the horn for 6 months.

Thanks to all for the responses. The trumpet can send a powerful message.

Incidentally, here in Detroit there is most always a funeral band for professional musicians. At most of the African-American funerals this is done in a New Orleans style marching out of the church with the casket.

Thanks for sharing your touching tribute, Gordon. You definitely communicated much love and emotion through the classic hymn, and the recording most likely has provided much emotional healing and assistance to your nephew's family.

I work as a hospice chaplain, and one of our patients who was on hospice a couple of months ago, had played trumpet for over 60 years. Afer he died, the funeral home had created a beautiful tableau of photographs arranged on and around his open trumpet case and trumpet, showing him playing trumpet while in the service during WWII, and later in life.

Because he was a Veteran, when we traveled out to the cemetery for the graveside service, there were two members of the U.S. Army to preside at the graveside. I was hoping to hear an inspired rendition of taps on a bugle, but I am sad to say that what we heard was a crackled recording of Taps from a ceremonial bugle that should have been buried a long time ago. I did not know that some of our military branches were using these false-instruments when they are short of buglers.

I did some research and have learned about a great organization called "Bugles Across America" which provides volunteers to play Taps on bugles, trumpets, cornets or flugelhorns, for Veterans' funeral and memorial services. I hope that some TrumpetHerald members might consider volunteering in this role. I know that I will do so when this comeback player's range builds up a little more reliably in the upper register.

Thanks again, Gordon, for your inspiration!

Marc
