Hi. Do you know of any good advanced lead trumpet play along with a CD? I've done the sitting with the big band volume 2, which is good but is at intermediate level only. Looking for something more advanced and higher range to practice with sometimes.

I believe there's a Tony Scodwell book/CD and a Big Phat Band book/CD that are pretty advanced.

Basie-Nestico lead book. Just play along with their lead player.

Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band puts out an excellent lead book with play along on many of their tunes. This means that you will be playing Wayne Bergerons part.

I'm surprised not to see more mention of Comfort, Command & Control in the Trumpet Section, etudes composed by Steve Guttman & performed by Dan Collette:

https://www.kendormusic.com/store/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=3698

These are stand-alone trumpet quartets in a variety of big band styles. Each of the 22 etudes has five tracks - one with all 4 parts, then a music-minus-one track for each part. There is a separate book for each part, and performance tips for each etude.

Perhaps some balk at the price, but if you can afford it, CC&C is a quality product and well worth the money. I find them quite challenging, and loads of fun.

GizB, that sounds like good value if it's 4* 22= 88 parts?

X9 (if I may be so familiar!), your math skills are impeccable! Yes, there are 88 parts, which make for a lot of great sight-reading. If the 1st parts are too demanding, there is plenty of challenging playing in the lower parts.

I'm not a lead player but can handle some of the 1st parts. They're not impossible. A quick glance shows that most 1st parts top out around C or D, with occassional Db's & E's. I believe Dan Collette plays some optional higher notes at times.

This may be an expensive volume, but the price is very reasonable for what you get. These are stand-alone etudes which can be performed by a trumpet quartet, or by you with the MMO-style CDs.

SmartMusic has a lot of the Big Phat Band charts as well as tons of other stuff to play along with. Well-worth the $40/year, in my opinion.

I think the price is definitely a big factor. Risking that much money on "etudes" usually loses out when you can spend much less to read (and play) along to charts that you recognize and will likely play in a big band at some point.

The etude book may be great, but without seeing/hearing some of the parts first I hesitate to blindly spend that much.

GBD - I understand why price is a factor, but look at it this way: you'd spend as much for some mutes, and most mouthpieces. E-jazzlines has it for $65:

http://www.ejazzlines.com/COMFORT-COMMAND-CONTROL-IN-THE-TRUMPET-SECTION-p136200.html

And you're right that you'll never see these exact pieces in an actual big band chart, but one advantage is the music-minus-one-part play along.

For some of us who have no access to a big band, this fills a need.

Don't misunderstand me, I have NOTHING negative at all to say about " Comfort, Command & Control...". I'm sure it's a great resource and well worth the money.

My point is that if I'm looking for Big Band play-alongs (like in the thread title) then I'm going to look for just that, and there are plenty available at reasonable price points.

Again, nothing against the resource you mentioned, just responding to your confusion as to why it might not be more popular.

No, I have not! Any good? I don't want anything easy or intermediate. Looking to push myself. So etudes are fine since am looking to build chops and experience in this style.

My Hal Leonard published book called "Big Band Classics with Tony Scodwell" is geared for the player wishing to play the role of leader with a big band backing. The seven pieces may not seem like much but I will assure you after finishing "Things Ain"t What They Used To Be" you will be pooped. I set it up with sax and brass cues so it really does simulate standing in front of your own big band. A bonus is the ability to alter tempos without changing pitch via the computer and includes the CD with and without the solo transcriptions. It should be available easily through music stores selling Hal Leonard books and many outlets via Googling my name.

Tony Scodwell
Scodwell USA Trumpets and Flugelhorns available in the US only at Washington Music Center, call Lee Walkowich at 301.946.8808 and at Sax and Woodwind… and Brass in Sydney, Australia and Musik-Bertram in Freiburg, Germany.

I have that book, it's a lot of fun thanks to the way he has it set up, as described above.

The book/cd series ranges from easy to very hard. I tended to get the styles I needed to work on (like Latin).

Craig Fraedrich's site has the 1st Trumpet parts to 10 tunes on his album "A Minor Matter":
http://craigfraedrichmusic.com/Educational%20Materials%20New%202.htm
and a link to audio files of the 10 tracks:
http://craigfraedrichmusic.com/Recordings%20New.htm

Which leads to a more general suggestion - perhaps see if any of your local band leaders are willing to give you copies of the 1st trumpet parts of some of the standard repertoire and play along with the recordings.

best,
Kimberly
