Which works? What artists? What recordings? _________________ Andy
I'll admit it. It's a TR300, but it wants to be a Strad when it grows up. |

Solo or orchestral? They can be quite different (though not necessarily). Either way there will be many insanely long lists...! |

Don't forget Sergei Nakariakov! (Soloist) He's performing at a level that I don't think anyone can touch right now.
Also Alison Balsom (soloist), she's one of the current best as well... |

Maybe I should rephrase my questions! Maybe I should have put more emphasis on "BASIC"! I'm not looking for an exhaustive list.
Let's put it this way. What are the works that someone just getting familiar with the trumpet literature should have and listen to first? What are your favorite performers and/or recordings of those. I'm thinking in terms of 10 or 12 most important. _________________ Andy

The comment about Andre for classical solo is dead on. Pretty much miles ahead of anyone else alive or dead.
For full symphonic works, break out the Chicago Symphony recordings. Reiner and Solti especially. The good news is most of the Reiner recordings have been reissued on CD in recent years, and can be picked up for < $10 each. Solid gold. |

My favorite CDs by my favorite trumpet players (but pretty much any CD of them is recommendable):
Solo de Concours - Matthias Höfs
Trumpet Acrobatics - Matthias Höfs
Gansch meets Höfs - Matthias Höfs & Hans Gansch
Trumpet Concerto - Hans Gansch |

What are everyone's favorite classical pieces? Are there symphonies that everyone should be able to recognize? I would like to increase my knowledge of trumpet in classical music... |
