Just as a point of reference I'm an A5 owner and the valves on my horn are one of my favorite parts of the horn! They've always been super light and smooth and never had a bit of trouble from them.
Not doubting your experience at all. just providing mine as someone who plays the A5 regularly. _________________ Adams Gold Brass/Nickel Flugel

I understand that Adams use Bauerfeind valves which are excellent...I have them on two horns and the spring resistance is on the light side and for me feel quick. Perhaps they have changed this.... of course at my skill level I will never be in danger of breaking the speed limit.
I have just acquired a trumpet with vented valves....it feels like I just might be able to play a bit quicker...would that help?

One thing that might be throwing you off is that the A5 has long-stroke valves, so the "resting" height of the pistons might be higher than you are used to.
Benges are also like that, and it took me a few weeks to get used to that longer throw _________________ More than one trumpet

This is exactly what I feel as well on the a5. One thing you can do through the factory is get a set of A4 top caps and buttons for the horn to help minimize the valve stroke travel (at least in terms of the feel) as the a4 caps are recessed slightly. I did that on an a5 in the shop and LOVED the result.
Best,

OK so I got another go at this horn and you are absolutely right - I needed to change my hand position a little bit and bang the valves down harder than is necessary on the Carol, which produced a smooth fast result.
No need for new fingers...... |
Glad to hear you don't need new fingers to play a horn! _________________ More than one trumpet
