I have a trumpet listed in the Marketplace section under Bb Trumpets. I was contacted yesterday by a Mike Brown for additioinal information and photos. I responded. Later, I received the following:

Thanks for the reply,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we
are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kupe project,
i am at sea right now so l wont be able to check the Schilke X4,am
buying this for my dad as a surprise gift so am willing to offer you
the amount you required. I can only pay through PayPal at the moment
as i don't have access to my bank account online(i don't have internet
banking with it), but i have it attached to my PayPal account, and
this is why i insisted on using PayPal to pay,all i will need is your
PayPal email address to make the payments, and if you don't have a
PayPal account yet, you can set one up at www.paypal.com it cant take
you less than 3mins to do that,i will be expecting your PayPal email
so l can pay. I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up
after payments has been sorted.l will be waiting for your reply asap.

Regards...

* There is a New Zealand Oil and Gas, and, according to their website, they are working in the Taranaki Basin.
* I cannot find a TH registry for Mike Brown.
* I checked with SCAMS@TRUMPETHERALD.COM, and this was verified as a scam.
* The above has many of the classic 'red flags:' poor grammer, lack of capitalization, request for information, etc.
* Be careful out there!!!

By the way, my Schilke X4 is still for sale, and it is a great horn!

The scam was so obvious that I wonder why your posting a horn for sale against policy is not.

Don't be cynical. The guy gave fair warning of an actual scammer, and that information was clearly the main point of the post, and certainly occupied the vast majority of prose in the post. I doubt anyone objects to his mentioning of his horn still be for sale as a single sentence at the end of his post (except perhaps you).

Maybe I have seen more than my share of the "offshore" scam, as to me it seems totally obvious, and maybe I am a cynic, but at least I'm not a wolf.

One can deduce the presence of an ad, including the actual item, from the post, and the tag line steps over the line, IMO.

The one and only time I used an agent to buy a horn, I sent the agent the money, and he paid the seller cash. The agent then sent me the horn. If you don't trust the agent with the money, why would you trust him with the horn? So, in my mind any kind of N-way sale is automatically a scam.

BTW, pcctpt, it is still possible to remove the last sentence by editing.

The supposition that no one else objects does not mean the post doesn't stray outside the policy. And by my continuing to post in this thread I actually help the OP with his Marketplace hopes, so perhaps I am conflicted and really need some help. Oh well, I am fallible too.

Note the Forum Moderators cannot do anything in the Marketplace. Only the sysadmin can do anything over there.

And also note that advertising horns (etc) in the forums is frequently allowed by the moderators, especially after a bunch of members post that the advertiser is really a nice guy. Violating the rule about advertising in the forums should apparently be allowed if the advertiser is a fine player, a successful merchant, or well-liked. The main use for this widely violated "rule" seems to be to haze newcomers.

We don't read every bloody post, we actually have real lives outside TH. If you see a bad post, PM Moderators for action. Posting in the thread just prolongs the agony.
