Hey Everyone-

I am really excited to announce that, at Mannes College of Music, we have arranged to have international soloist, current professor of trumpet at the University of Miami, and former Principal trumpet of The Chicago Symphony Craig Morris come to spend 3 days working with our trumpet studio! This will include a solo recital in our concert hall on Tuesday, October 7th at 8pm and a Masterclass the following morning, Oct. 8th from 9-12.
The recital will be music of Philip Glass and I am sure it will be great!
Craig has an extraordinary wealth of knowledge when it comes to the trumpet, whether it's solo rep or getting ready for auditions (or anything else!), and I hope that many of you can come to both the recital and the class!
Mannes is at :
150 West 85th Street
Concert Hall
2nd Floor
New York NY 10024

I hope to see you there!

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, 2nd Trumpet
Mannes Trumpet faculty and Brass Chairman

Mannes student here,

Craig ran a studio class, brass sectional, and has given private lessons. He is not only an amazing trumpet player, but an incredible teacher and a really cool person to talk to! I left the studio class with countless new ways to approach practicing, interpreting music, help curb performance anxiety, and prepare for auditions/concerts.

Craig's recital tonight (7:30pm at the Mannes Concert Hall) is going to be amazing. He has cleverly picked out a really interesting program of all Philip Glass music that one does not always get to hear on the trumpet, and has taken a lot of time and thought into putting it together. Also, tomorrow from 9-12 there will be a masterclass that is going to cover a wide array of music. You really don't want to miss it, Craig is an incredible teacher.

Thanks Ray for putting this together! You are great!!

Unfortunately, I was not able to make the masterclass the following day, but I was very fortunate to attend Mr. Morris' recital.

I have not attended many live trumpet concerts over the years, but the few that I managed to get to, were top notch shows by Wynton Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval, James Morrison, Lew Soloff, Phil Smith, just a few trumpet lightweights whose names you may recognize:)

Let me just say, I was blown away by Craig Morris, his ringing sound, but especially the trumpet show he put on. So much trumpet, such great sound, textures, articulations, and ENDURANCE, which I covet and respect most other than sound, in terms of player attributes. He was a one man trumpet soundtrack for a show that lasted pretty much an hour with a short break in between. He literally blew a metal pipe for a solid 50 min out of an hour, with a big sweat mark down his back as the only evidence of this physical feat. It really seemed the only time he took the horn off his face was to switch horns, all of which had such individual personalities. Bb, picc, and what looked like a Shargerl Rotary Flugel? (i'm not an equipment head, but looked like the Gansch horn).

I wish I could comment more about the music, but I just truly got lost. Rather, i could tell you about how while listening, I thought about my parents, my dog, thought about whether Aliens were humanoid bees, etc....to me, this is the best music, the kind you stop listening to consciously moments after the performance and allows your imagination to stretch out.

Vince Penzarella says in that one youtube video, great trumpet players should do great things. And that is what this was, a great performance and truly inspirational from a musical, showmanship, trumpet play-ability and physical/athletic perspective. Was truly an Artistic performance and I feel like I'm a better person for having listened to it.

Thanks so much to Ray, who btw looks more like a linebacker than a trumpeter for you trollers out there, for putting this together!
