A great new guidebook for brass players has been published by Larry
Meregillano. I just bought a copy, and I'm really enjoying it. I think that the isometric exercises are worth the purchase price alone. You can go to www.larrymeregillano.com for more information. The following is excerpted
from the book promo:
"Learn to develop chops like the legends of the past from Larry Merigillano, a student of Cat Anderson, Harold “Pappy” Mitchell, Roy Stevens, Claude Gordon, and many other legendary players and teachers of the trumpet.
-Efficiency, Range and Control through the Power of the Hermetic Seal
-Ear training using chord symbols, arpeggios, and scales
-Methods from Masters of the Past that are Relevant for Today’s Player
-Embedded mp3 sound files in every lesson"
Enjoy!

The isometric seal exercise is a great addition to the other isometric exercises that have been used over the years. I also like the in-depth explanations of the Cat Anderson Whisper G, the Stevens Palm Exercise, and more. The anecdotal advice that precedes each of the progressive lessons is very helpful, as well. I'm working on the Major 7th exercises, and I'm beginning to feel a difference in my playing! |

One thing I really feel helps my embouchure is to do the hermetic seal but not as hard as I can, just softly blowing into the closed mouthpiece, this will identify the correct muscles, strengthen them but in a relaxed way which I could do for hours... this way I can do the hermetic seal on and off all day long without really feeling tired. It really helped strengthen my embouchure and not wreck my playing that same day and also gets you into the habit of forming a puckered, relaxed embouchure such as jon faddis' embouchure
Sorry for boring you all! |
