Hi everyone. I think it would be pretty cool to have a tablet to read music pdfs. Any suggestions? Need to be big enough to see the music, show music pdfs properly, ability to email a page of the pdf to a student etc. A lot of the advice on this topic on the web appears out of date.

Also I'm guessing Sibelius would be too big for a tablet? Do you know of an alternative program to write some basic music parts out on a tablet like an exercise? Thanks

There was a thread about this recently in the Lounge. Covered both tablets and SW.

I use an iPad (full size not the mini) and an app called forscore to display/mark/organise the pdf's and it works amazingly well!

Any recommendations for tablets other than iPads? I'm looking for something less expensive, and software that would be similar to Forscore, which I believe is Apple-only.

Check out the other thread. Androids are popular.

I ordered a Samsung from a Black Friday sale. Will let you know how it goes. Quite a few tablets had discounts on.

MobileSheets seems popular but check out the thread in the Lounge (linked in my post above).

A quick Google search found this: http://techfortheclassicalsinger.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/forscore-and-android-a-no-go-for-the-time-being/

This is exactly why I am waiting (perhaps forever) for the ipad "Pro" (i.e a long-rumored new model sporting a display in the 12.2 - 12.9" range). If it ever shows up, a lot of musicians will be first in line to buy one. I could "get by" with the current model if I had to, but with the inevitable age issues with vision creeping up, I'd much prefer a larger one.

Forscore is worth the wait, too. Really nicely done app. I've played with supposedly competing products on android, but they all seem clumsy in comparison.

I'm with you Randy. Bring on an iPad with a bigger screen. I can get by with normal size but bigger is better.

Check out Orpheus. The interface is easy, it can connect with a dropbox folder and you can cache the files so that you don't need a wi-fi connection. I was using mobile sheets but I had issues with it on a couple of my tablets trying to upload the files to the tablet. That was when I went looking around and found Orpheus.

While I don't have a tablet, I DO have an old MusicPad Pro, no longer made, with a 12" screen. All my books and solos have been scanned into the format for the thing (Brother makes a 11x17 printer/scanner that is WELL worth the couple of hundred if you're going to copy much of your music).

A friend with an iPad showed me music on that, and while it was readable, it was probably too small to be used in all circumstances.

My daughter has a 10.5" Samsung and things looked much better on there. I'd like to see things on the Samsung 12". When my MusicPad dies, that' probably what I'll be looking at.

Until I used the ipad in rehearsal and performance, I too was under the mistaken impression that the screen size was an issue. Just like some I have older eyes and presbyopia has made reading a challenge.

I looked at purchasing a musicpad because it was larger. But at that point it was clear it was reaching the end of support. I looked at existing tables and vapor ware and found nothing that I was willing to invest in.

Most of us imagine reading the iPad at the same distance as the desk on your normal music stand. But the beauty is that you can move the iPad closer than the bell of your trumpet if you choose, thus making the size pretty much a non-factor.

That said, I did find I missed the horn feedback I recieved from the standard music stand.

I put in my order for the 31" iPad with forScore. It's on backorder.

I've got an iPad for sale in the marketplace, if you're interested.

(Sorry for the shameless self promotion...)

OK so the Samsung 10.1" tablet arrived. It's OK! When I'm out and about I'll see the value of it.

OK, the tablet is not bad. One thing I don't like is when trying to play a track from it and line out from the headphone jack to silent brass or other- it hisses.
